Sure, they can look cool (see image below) - thing is they can be dangerous, I've heard from many people that it stings when sparks fly from them. IMO someone who has turned up to watch a band shouldn't have to go through that.

If we are talking hand held flares like in footy matches. A good flare used correctly by a responsible person has very little danger attached to it's use. A cheap flare in the middle of a crowd operated by a pissed up divvie, well ....

Having said that I've seen plenty of hand held flares and never seen anyone inured. I did hear there were injuries at a festival in Australia where they basically lit the flare and threw it, which brings me nicely back to pissed up divvies in crowds.

I personally like them but wouldn't want someone holding one above my head while I was watching a gig that I didn't know and trust. I;ve read they burn around the same temp as required to melt steel so, yeah..
