Not sure I agree with either of those points. Glastonbury is a huge time/money commitment and requires organisation, but relatively speaking Sonisphere is a lot closer to a Wembley or O2 concert - Day Ticket, easily accessible from London, etc.

Metallica may not be a new, largely unknown band, but there's definitely an element of the mainstream that has ignored them over the years because of their name/genre that could be surprised by their performance. I think there's definitely potential for a big increase in interest.

The day ticket point is a good one, but it's still going to be a considerable amount of effort and money after dragging your arse around Glastonbury for six days. I'm not saying it wouldn't happen, I'm saying given the circumstances the amount it doea will be very limited.

And yes there's the potential for a big increase in interest, but I don't think that would be focused as Soni tickets given the circumstances. They're far more likely to see a rise in album sales than Soni ticket sales.

Put it this way, I don't think Soni will be rubbing their hands with glee if Metallica are announced for Glastonbury.

The same wording has been used in every local paper article in regards to Sonisphere this year.

It's certainly not been used in every press release. I've read every press release.

I don't know what the wording was in 2003 as it was 11 years ago, all I know is that Metallica played an unadvertised secret set at Download 2003 and headlined the following year to make up for it, as they were in talks to headline Download in 2003, but chose to exclusively headline Reading and Leeds instead.

Could be a similar situation here, where they headline Sonisphere this year and headline Glastonbury next year, as no doubt they will be back in Europe next summer anyway.

The only "special" thing about 2003 is that they did what it suited them to do. They wanted to do it so they did.

We know they want to do Glastonbury, so who knows what they might choose to do to make that happen.

I've been doing the job I do for more than long enough to know that denials mean naff all if it's something that has to be kept quiet, and they often the person who might make the denial believes it to be true because that's what they've been told. So the denials or claims of exclusive mean nothing.

I've also been sat here long enough to get a good feel for what is the truth from what might go past my eyes. When I'm getting the sort of info I'm getting on Metallica from sources in all sorts of different places (and where I've known some of them for decades) then I know it's more likely to be true than not.

But I also know that bad rumours do go around at even the greatest heights of the music biz sometimes, and ultimately all I have is 'gossip', along with some coincidental facts.

Is that true? I think it was the other way around, that they'd already agreed to headline R&L and when a Download headlinerm (I forget who) pulled out they were asked (and wanted) to fill in, the R&L contract wouldn't let them so they played a secret set instead.

that R/L contract, I heard at the time, said "no other advertised shows" and not "no other shows".

Wouldn't make any difference to Sonisphere. Do you really think that a performance on tv would affect sales of a show a week later, especially when the target audience for Metallica probably wouldn't be watching Glasto highlights or would already have tickets to Sonisphere, I seriously doubt the usual Glasto goer would buy a ticket to Sonisphere based on 30mins of footage on tv.

They'd certainly benefit from some sales. How many it might be would be very hard to guess at.

Yes, absolutely I think it'd make a difference even at such short notice. It's happened before, no reason to assume it couldn't in this case.

It's not about "the usual Glasto goer" either. Millions of people watch the Glastonbury coverage on TV, and a decent amount of them would shudder at the thought of actually going due to the idea of mud and/or 5 days in a tent.

At the end of the day, with millions watching the headline acts live, plus more who see the highlights/iplayer, it'd only take a tiny percentage of them deciding "I wouldn't mind seeing that" to put a decent spike in Sonisphere ticket sales.

Metallica have about 14 albums, where the hell do I start!?! If anyone has a good idea of a likely setlist if they played, that would be a massive help.

start with Master Of Puppets, then Black Album/self titled, then Ride The Lightning. if you like them, Kill 'Em All and …And Justice For All (no need to listen to Load, ReLoad or St Anger really, and Death Magnetic is a slightly poorer version of their first four albums)

I actually started with the S&M live album. It's not really standard Metallica because of the orchestra but it has all the hits on it and it's a brilliant recording.

I think it's the best place to go. You also get the current Hetfield voice so a better representation of the band nowadays than his voice on the earlier records i.e. Pre Load.

they'll maybe (unfortunately) throw in their cover of Whiskey In The Jar at Glasto i imagine, but beyond that, people came to see a Metallica show - not a 'Metallica cover songs by your favourite band' show

Metallica is good - i think they would need to pick a careful set list to be the main gig on saturday. Otherwise, for me, they would be more suited to the middle act on the saturday.
