cheers! I am bloody proud to say I actually took it. I am starting to hope for some PYRO for the Metallica set from the top fixture. The energy just being there was huge as well.

Youngest's school fair today. The Mrs was chatting to his teacher and it cropped up in the conversation that I was going to Glastonbury.

The teacher suddenly proclaimed herself very jealous 'cos she'd love to go see Metallica.

This was a shock to all in the vicinity as she doesn't look like a 'tallica fan and has never mentioned them before. I'm taking it as an omen that the crowd will be bigger than expected.

I think it's a bit of a generalisation, but a LOT of the faux-offended responses to their announcement (not strictly on these forums) have conformed to that perception. Maybe not the 'less educated' claim, but certainly the former. Lots of snobbery on show.

yeah I'm less educated I only hold a master degree in computer science...... lol.

There definitely is that perception about hard rock and metal heads to some degree. A study a few years ago looked at personality traits based on their music preferences and it transpired that those that liked heavy metal had almost the same personality traits as those that like classical music. There was another one that linked IQ levels with music also, classical came out top and pop came out bottom.

TOTALLY disagree about class distinctions.

I've been to Reading and Download and the Metal fans there are middle class kids that just behave rowdier than people into say indie music. That's why Bruce Dickonson was so far off the mark when he invited journalist's to see a 'real' festival by coming to Meltdown, as if there was a big class gap, making it somehow more meaningful. The UK Metal/Punk crowd is largely the same class as Glastonbury goers- they're just more 'destructive' in their behaviour - burning tents, throwing bottles of piss; so it's a sloppy assumption to say 'bad behaviour equates to working class,' if anything there's is a more brattish, spoilt approach to Festival going.

I think Lars from Metallica was basing the class distinction on American culture. In the US the 'White Van Driver' equivalent pumps metal, drinks beer in car parks/rough bars and drives a 'ute.' The equivalent tradies here, road workers, white van drivers etc. etc. wouldn't touch Metal with a barge pole: 'Fucking goths!!' It's completely different comparing the US and AMerican scene like this.

To summarise, UK Metal is nothing to do with 'working class,' it's largely the same types as Glastonbury, but the scene's behavour is different, spoilt kids throwing piss and burning tents..
