Some sub-genres and styles of metal are very much niche (mainly due to the divisive nature of some bands' aggressive/screamed/ growled vocals, or weird proggy elements) but Metallica do not fall in to that category.

It'd be a different conversation if we were talking about other metal band bookings but Metallica are a pretty safe booking as far as the genre goes, the safest probably. They're seasoned festival headliners, a big big band, they put on a brilliant show.

The only real issue is that people are pretty closed minded when they see the "metal" label.

This Katy Perry argument is fucking ridiculous. You can't ask someone to explain concretely why an act shouldn't headline a festival; it's not possible to do that. Therefore the best reason for acts like Katy Perry, McBusted, One Direction and Justin Bieber to not headline Glastonbury is because they're unmistakable shite that has no kind of credibility.

People hate Muse, Radiohead and RHCP, but I don't turn into a 13 year old having a hissy fit when someone says they're shite or that they shouldn't headline a festival.

Anyway, I'm watching S&M now and I'm excited to see Metallica (if they headline). I'd prefer Prince but hey ho, I'll be seeing Arcade Fire the night before, Jack White directly beforehand and Massive Attack the following day; I'm not going to be picky about the remaining headliner.

you could make an argument for specialised, but not 'small'. Maybe within the context of 'anyone who listens to music', but you could make that argument about any genre of music. But no one does - because it's a fucking stupid one.

As a Metallica fan for a few years now I know that they do not usually play Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters at their gigs as the die hard metal fans only want the heavier songs, yet with it not being their usual crowd I reckon they will obviously play the two.

I understand that they may want to appeal more to the Glastonbury crowd but I really fucking hope they stay true themselves and do what the Metallica fans have always loved;

Opening with Ecstasy of Gold followed by Creeping Death! I say they should do all of the greats Master of Puppets, and the even the old stuff like Kill Em All.

and for once in this thread i agree with you! they're a thrash metal band - i want to see them play thrash metal songs. they're best albums are thrash metal albums - i want to hear the songs from those albums. to think that they're gonna do anything different is ludicrous

Perhaps you should read the definition again. It's not talking about the act itself, its talking about the genre. Metallica are without a doubt the blandest metal act who fit the bill, they're very much the u2 of metal, however if you think that metal has the kind of unified appeal to the mainstream the majority of other genres have, you're in denial.
