I thought The Black Keys were great in 2012, but they were a hell of a lot better on their arena tour a few months later. I get the impression they weren't used to those massive outdoor shows at that stage. Definitely think they could pull off a headline slot with another big album.

NME to sub headline in 2 years? Bit of a big jump but this is R&L so I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen

NME headline is equivalent to 3rd on main stage isn't it? With a popular album I could see them being a sub, although it would be the weak sub if they were to play.

Not really. It's equivalent to anywhere between 2nd-5th depending on the band. You get a few cult older acts like Pumpkins/Pixies/NIN/Faith No More who could end up headlining the tent but would play 2nd or 3rd, and then you get newer acts with one hit album who wouldn't be even considered for a top 3 spot. Placings aren't equivalent just by some formula.

2nd? 5th? It's always appeared to be 3rd/4th. And yeah obviously a band with more albums is likely to be higher on main stage. Formula? Doesn't everyone go off a 5 year rule or something? Formulas don't work because certain bands may or may not be relevant by the next time they play. I was just suggesting why Alt-J could sub, not that I think it will happen nor do I think it should happen

Problem :P

But nah, people brought up the 5 year rule but it gets mocked even more than it gets used.

That's the thing, the formulas don't work. I think it'd take quite a lot for Alt-J to end up subbing, it's quite a big slot. NME headline definitely isn't directly comparable to any particular mainstage slot.

Yeah they'd need a massive album and even then it probably wouldn't happen. Like I say it shouldn't and probably won't happen. Thank god

I've personally always seen NME headliners to be around 3rd or 4th main size but obviously everything went in the shitter last year.

Definitely think mumfords and Metallica at the moment, who should both have new albums by then. Dunno about 3rd but foos and chilis will have new albums by then too.

It is the typical size, but you get some who wouldn't be anywhere near that (ATDI) and then other bands who sub but could realistically headline NME (NIN).

    • Tbf that happened to me in 2022 so not a one off. 40 euros to drive down 3 streets. I'd have done a runner but the reason for getting the taxi in the first place is cos I couldn't walk no more.
    • I was fully prepared (waterproof jacket, extra pair of socks, foldable umbrella), but after four hours in the rain (from Geese through Oklou to Florence Road), it was just too much. Already at the hotel, let's hope tomorrow's better.
    • It’s rare that I watch question time, but I almost felt sorry for Kenyon, he seemed like a guy just brought off the street which effectively is what he was, made worse by the fact Burnham and the Tory guy were very strong debaters. I think Burnham was very aware not to go too hard on Kenyon and risk him getting sympathy, in fact he pretty much ignored him.
