Planning v bimbling...

From amfy in the /topic/175271-what-have-you-done-today-to-get-ready-for-glastonbury/page-45">"What Have You done...." thread:

I have started seriously going through the clashfinder, working out everything I want to see, so that I can narrow it down a bit. There is far too much I want to see, and I need to rationalise this down and decide what acts I cannot miss, and then let go of the others. I have realised that being ridiculously over prepared is the only way to avoid being on a constant itinery when I am there. If I don't get organised, my bimbling time will be crushed.

I'm a first timer and I have a mental list of 10 things I want to see and do over the 5 days (e.g. eat a Growler, visit the Rabbit Hole) and the rest will be what I stumble across as a when. There's around 4 artists/bands each day that are 'must see' too. I think that's an alright balance because I've accepted there's no way I can see and do everything even by half.

Plan it all out as much as you like, just be prepared for the fact that following a group of people dressed as tuna fish through the greenfields will take priority over all of it.

i looked at the line up when it came out and it scared me - loads of good stuff. i looked again when they released more names and although there's loads of stuff i'd happily see, it is almost academic: i'll miss most of it anyway.

i never use a clashfinder - that way madness lies.

Well I work on site so i have to turn up at a certain time for that, but apart from that and planning on seeing the stones I have no plans what so ever.

I will meet my friend jaz lead singer with the band tankus the henge and wander about with him a bit and will visit the dc site services compound to say hello to people I know there at some point, but haven't looked at a programme or clashfinder haven't drawn up lists .

I know the site really well so I dont have a list of places i must visit, what I'd do is get a map and just wander about, pick a couple of bands you would like to see live, dont try to see it all because you wont be able to, Make friends with people and wander about go into random tents stay a while if enjoying it stay if you feel like wandering some more wander do this for five days

I was considering using the four colours on clashfinder as a rating system..

4 colours = must see

3 colours = would like to see

2 colours = if I'm near by could see

1 colour = heard they might be good if someone suggests it or if I happen to be there then see them

Haven't done it yet and even if I do I would probably not print it out and just go see what others wanted to anyway

I plan meticulously every time. Then turn up, get lost/drunk and end up where the wind takes me. Never regretted it for a second.

That said, I'd make sure that if you have any "must sees" you somehow have a reminder system - especially if it's more than 1 a day.

Pretty good bimbling year this year as the weather will be dry and warm (yes it will!) and I only have about 3 or 4 must sees all weekend, none of which are Sunday so even pissed senseless I can probably cope with that.

At my first fest I ran round like a loon trying to see All Of The Bands and it was great, but I didn't really get to experience all of the other excitement there is to be had by random bimbling. These days I have a very few 'things I must see or do' (this year it's Frightened Rabbit, Smashing Pumpkins, Bee and Ben's singing workshop in the Healing Fields, and Eavis in the Speaker's Forum) and the rest of it is bimbling all the way!

Plan what you want to do, but don't plan when to do it.

If you don't think about the experiences you want beforehand then you will forget to do a few of them.

But if you say a long time beforehand "I'm definitely going to go up the Stone Circle in the gap between the Editors and Smashing Pumpkins" then you are missing out on the chance to be free and follow whatever grabs your attention.

The way to ensure you get a full Glastonbury experience is not to plan in too many bands - that way you have plenty of time just to explore - and don't go to bed too early!

The music is still a huge part of it for me, so I will plan out who I want to see and where I will see them in detail before I go. I'll probably miss a few but will make sure I see most of what I've planned out.

Luckily most of the music isn't to my taste so that leaves plenty of wandering time.

for the three days i've pretty much planned which bands i'd like to see from from noon until midnight, but some of them are much more 'must sees' than others and i'm sure getting absolutely wasted all day will amend my plans somewhat. just as long as i get to see those must sees, i'm happy. gonna try and get my bearings and do a lot of the exploring on the Wednesday and Thursday so if i DO end up watching bands for the entirety of the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, i won't feel like i've missed out as much

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
