Biffy have done it the old fashioned way though, gradually getting bigger and working their way up. And as for having the ability to headline, you don't tour as much as they have without becoming a tight and seasoned band, they have more than enough ability, and the material to back it up.

Just to clarify what I think, biffy, Mumford, and rage are all big enough to headline

Biffy- they deserve it, have worked up to it, have the songs, and put on a grande show

Mumford - very popular very quickly, i think their songs sound far too similar for their own good, but they are epic and could make an interesting 90 minute set. Then I would want to see them NEVER AGAIN

Rage- headlined same show they'd do now in 08. Thats why I don't think reading would want to book them again, although they still could pull of a grande headline show, especially to people that haven't seen them before

Barely a crush I can just notice patterns in music - and I'm not the only one. The biggest criticism of Mumford and Sons is their lack of deviation from the generic indie folk outline.

They wouldn't have headlined in 2010, you have absolutely no objective way to measure that!

Well they headlined soni in 2011 and pulled off a grande show. And download getting to sub was considered a strong booking. That was all off only revs. Now they have released a critically acclaimed number 1 double album. They won't sub again.

And Puzzle's. Soni is a smaller festival. I'm not denying myself that they deserve it now but in that year, it was a festival nowhere near as big that gave them that chance

But it was a fest that had been headlined by

Metallica (twice)

Iron maiden

Linkin park

All of who had previously tipped the bill at R&L.....

Yeah it was a smaller festival but the acts that it attracted were quite big really.

Exactly, they've worked their way up, nobody is saying they were an instant sucsess story. And let's not forget that in took Greenday until their 6/7th album to headline.

Someone said it the other day on here. As in, loads hate Mumford on here for eg, but the album didn't do what it's done and put them at a headlining position cause everyone hates them. I met a guy who loves loves the other day with lyrics from Mumford tattooed on his arm.

200 on here, 170k there, I'm fairly sure, this board caters for a minority.

I agree, Mumford produced mainstream which puts you in the limelight. Until they had worked their way up enough, it obviously wasn't seen that they are at the headline stage, or they would've done it.
