I must say it would fit with rumours I have heard over the last couple of years. Some of them were a little premature but it would fit.

Rolling Stones I heard a rumour for at the fest last year.

U2

Rolling Stones

Take That

...hmmmmm It would be a very glasto mix that's for sure. ie odd at first sight but works in practice

I wish people would stop being so up their own arse about Take That - Barlow writes all the songs these days it just so happens none of them play instruments and 2 are backing singers. Glasto is a performing arts festival remember and they are arguably one of the best 'performers' around at the moment. Of course the old Glasto adage goes - there are 60 other feckin stages so if you don't want to see them... don't

Personally would rather someone like Arcade Fire but can't please all the people all the time.

right now after semi-defending That That I am off to listen to some proper music tongue.gif

I see the real music bores are coming out of the woodwork with the 'they don't write their own music' argument. Brilliant!

Who can honestly say that it's important to them that the music the listen to/go and watch at Glasto is written by the act that performs them? And why do you feel that way, I'm genuinely intrigued.

Surely it's what the bloody thing sounds like, or how you react to it on an emotional level, that's important? Why do people give a toss who wrote the song? It just seems utterly bizarre to me.

Yeah so in a nutshell, my mate was working (in a hotel) and one of the guests were citizens of pilton, they claimed to be friends with ME and have stated that he has told them that rolling stones and take that are playing.

Now I don't actually believe this, I mean anyone in the pilton area could make these claims or just anyone in general in fact. Just would love one of you to destroy the take that claim more than anything. I was in belief that the stones would play anywho.

Many thanks

History has shown me that while residents of Pilton claim to know who's playing, they rarely do - in fact the general standard of their info is no better than what's posted on these forums. That of course doesn't mean that they're all necessarily in the dark, but it's impossible to know who does have the right info and who doesn't.

As for Take That, my own info is that they're not (or at least, weren't - this is how things were less than a month ago from my sources) playing, and Emily recently insisted to me that her tweets are always truthful - and she's tweeted that they're not playing. But I do also know that various members of TT are wanting to play, and if a suitable slot were offered them they'd snap it up.

Ultimately, what I'm saying is that these things could happen, but if they do I'd still doubt that anyone from Pilton really knew what they were talking about.

My mate who lives in Aberdeen and who knows someone that once served Jason Orange an apple juice in a cafe in Rhyll heard that Howard like to throw puppies off bridges.

He also says that Mark Owen is a ginger but Gary makes him die his hair because he's scared that it will affect record sales. From what I've heard Mark is on the point of leaving the bamf because of Gary's controlling ways. Poor Mark just wants his pubes to be ginger again.

Whilst I completely agree with this, I do on some level care about tother aspects. I have more respect for someone/an act that has learned their craft over many years in terms of both writing music & lyrics and playing their own instruments. I have more respect for someone/an act that does what they do for a love of music, rather then entering and audition or going on a TV "talent" show just because they read too much Heat and feel that they need to be famous. I have more respect for someone/an act who puts in a passionate live performance from the heart than one that is choreographed to within an inch of it's life with a shed load of dancers and frippery.

Just my opinion, but it does matter to me.

Its about placement isn't it? Bootleg Beatles are never going be close to headlining the Pyramid really? They are on small stage given there all. While the take that corporate machine is trying to work out to maximise profit from their performance at Glastonbury (and yes i understand some other bands are like that to but I'd like to think most are at least in part cos they enjoy performing there.

Jeeez, change the record. I think over the past 20 years, TT have pretty much honed their song writing skills, and OMG, they've even learned some musical instruments. Their performances are pretty passionate - and if they didn't put a 'show' together then there would be the moaners too.

First few off the top of my head: Jez Wiliams, Andy Cairns, Nick Cave, Burt Bacharach, Mike Mills, Guy Garvey, Stevie Wonder, Damien Rice, Thom Yorke. All from very different musical spheres but with one thing in common - the ability to construct music that conveys and elicits a variety of emotional responses.

Cover bands or orchestra are different as there is no pretence. You know what material is being played and choose to buy/watch/listen accordingly. With a lot of pop acts at the moment, the "act" is just a pretty face(s) with a so-so voice being used as a puppet for a music factory. I think there was a song nominated for an Ivor Novello this year that was female artist (Cheryl Cole?) but the songwriting nomination was to a team of 17 anonymous writers. That just seems wrong to me, music should be art, not manufactured goods. Take That originate from this base, had a huge period in time when they didn't exist and since reforming have been given the sheen of journeyman credibility which I feel is undeserved.

I'm not saying I'm right or anyone is wrong - as I said, it's my opinion.

People who like Take That tend not to have much of a knowledge of music, or a real interest in it past what they hear on the radio. This, I think, is the sort of reason people view them as a lesser band.

I couldn't care less if they played (as long as it's not top 2 Pyramid or headlining Other), Shine is a decent tune but I doubt I'd watch them.

I dont understand why Barlow (now) is any different to those you've named? The strength of any song is purely dependent on the person who connects with it? If Barlow or Yorke or Wonder etc write and release a song that I like, surely that's all that matters, that the person who likes it, likes it? I f**king hate music snobbery, it makes me sick! The fact that anybody likes or dislikes anything is nothing to do with anybody else and should not be judged by anybody else. Every single song or piece of music has it's place in any market at any one time and is no worse or better than any other piece of music or song out there, it purely has different people appreciating it. END OF!

At the risk of sounding like I'm being argumentative (which I'm not) my experience of Gary Barlow's song writing is very 1 dimensional and formulaic. If you want a soaring pop song about love with a key change then he's definitely your man. As I mentioned before, those I quoted write songs that convey a variety of emotions which for me makes them better songwriters.

Again, for the cheap seats or in case you missed it, this is just my opinion.
