To be honest though, not a lot has changed in terms of REMs status over the last few years and in '08 they headlined Rock Werchter while further down the bill were Jay Z and The Kings of Leon, both of whom headlined glasto that year. To suggest REM couldn't headline a festival anymore is plain silly, of course they could. Just depends on the festival. I'd suggest Glasto remains one of the UK festivals they could quite comfortably headline (much more so than V). Having said that, they've a new album out soon, and if headline offers aren't there from UK fests then a lesser slot would allow them to showcase the newer stuff to a crowd who actually chose to see them over a "bigger" act. If they are over in Europe doing fests this summer, I'd expect them to headline somewhere (possibly even Werchter again as they play there with alarming regularity!).

Brilliant news, I imagine it's going to create a nasty clash though. If they are headlining the Other Stage one of the nights then that gives me a lot of confidence in the size of the headliners...

They'd be perfect under U2 though I reckons

In a perfect world I'd love something like

U2

Arcade Fire

Radiohead (Probably gonna be Coldplay I guess though)

R.E.M

The Stones

Pulp

And then maybe Other Stage headliners of something along the lines of The Chemical Brothers and two others (obviously)

I'm a 'young' attendee and would love to see R.E.M. and would see them over the majority of recently established bands.

A legends slot would go down best I think as no matter when they play, they're going to have one hell of a crowd. Just because people wouldn't necessarily pay £45 to see them on tour doesn't mean they wouldn't jump at the chance of seeing them at Glastonbury. Look at Snoop Dogg - he had probably the 3rd biggest crowd of the weekend (at least) yet didn't even sell out Shephards Bush the following week.

I appreicate that's a more extrene example but the point stands.

Who mentioned the stones or wonder or paul mcc? Not me fella. They are a great band but never headline material. And are not old enough to do the "legends" spot. Anyway. Like has been said. No young people would want to see them and any older people have probably seen them several times. And I seen the stones 3 years ago and that was just as shite as it would be seeing REM. And seen Paul 3 weeks ago and it was alright but he is one half of what was the Beatles which was a big (ish) band once upon a time. REM. Jesus. Load of pony but the park would be good for them like I say.

Haha yeah soz! You should mind your language pal. REM. Yeah can't wait. Would love to see them finish off with everybody hurts. That would be buzzin that would. In fact now I'm thinking about it the pyramid would be justified. On before rolf haha.

I'd assume the opposite, despite the AM's being quite hard to gauge the popularity of.

From the point of view of today's youngsters, what have REM done that's of interest to them? Nowt.

And from the point of view of an older audience that does have an interest, how many are there that haven't seen them already and are desperate to see them again? I wouldn't have thought the numbers are great, and I reckon that there's quite a number of bands that've broken thru in the last year or so which could easily outsell them with gig tickets to both sides of that potential audience.

i'm liking the idea of before u2, then the dream i had the other night could still stand:

Friday Pyramid:

U2

REM

Saturday Pyramid:

The Rolling Stones

Sunday Other:

Daft Punk

Beastie Boys

man what a weekend of headliners that would be

anyway, with regards to REM, I'm 19, saw them when I was 14 and they were amazing them. I would love to see them again, be it at glasto or elsewhere, and i know a lot of my friends going would as well. I didn't realise they'd fallen to not even a headlining band tbh :(

I'd be pleasantly surprised if they've managed to secure bands that are bigger than REM on all three evenings. Well done if they have. I agree they aren't as relent as they used to be. However, Glastonbury is much more respectful and aware of a band's heritage/ history and is more timeless about it's choices, particulalry on the Pyramid. Therefore, unless they clash with U2 or the Stones they WILL attract a big crowd. Personally prefer to see them second from top on the Pyramid, than the crappy Other stage. Let's not talk of Park slots or John Peel etc, it simply won't happen so don't waist your time discussing it.

Eavis has pulled another out the bag...Well done

P.s although still unlikely I do think the likelyhood of Radiohead playing has now increased as they have often billed/ tour together and are close friends.

REM = headliner, no quesiton. If they were placed anywhere else on a bill I would never buy another Glastonbury ticket again (in fact, I think I'd have to give up music). The only exception to that would be if they did a secret acoustic set somewhere...

Having said that, I'd be torn re seeing REM at Glasto again. 2003 was such a good show, it ranks in my top 3 gigs of all time, and I wonder whether they could ever top it. I had vowed never to see them again, it was that unbeatable, but was persuaded to see them at Old Trafford on the Accelerate tour. That was brilliant as well, but didn't beat Glasto.

I cannot believe that anyone could even conceptualise the idea of REM playing second fiddle to Codplay - even if that thought was only to be dismissed instantly. That fact that people can even think such things shows what a sick, twisted world this has become.
