U2 tour in chaos

I cannot believe the rubbish I have read in this thread, I think there is a lot of dreaming being done.

GFL is a business, headliners are used to sell tickets, the festival has sold out so there is absolutely no need to replace the headliner with a fresh act.

GFL will be insured for bands pulling out, as will U2 for any reason why they cannot headline protecting their fee. So Eavis now has the chance to get a headliner on the cheap, whilst keeping his headliner fee.

No big band is going to replace U2, far to many egos amongst the worlds biggest bands to be considered as just replacements to U2.

The line up will just move up the bill by one, step up Dizzee Rascal, you all know this is what will happen so stop dreaming & accept it...

Unless I am wrong & Emily makes that call to Chris Martin.....

As much as Im not keen on the fella, Id take my hat off to someone having surgery for publicity. Especially when its someone like Bono who must have wracked his brain trying to work out how he was going to get some publicity for the hundreds of thousands of tickets he has already sold and how the press might have some interest in the biggest band in the world right now.

Twig14, to say its a publicity stunt is ridiculous, what would they gain from it? I don't actually know if their stadium tour is sold out but surely putting doubt in peoples mind whether dates will be canceled is going to put people off buying tickets, not spur them on, and postponing a show is hardly a PR tactic.

just getting back onto EFests after a few days out of town, to see what the reaction has been, and I can't believe some of the 20 pgs worth on mainly rubbish on here, from the 'elation' of what seems like lot of people, to suggestions that bands that don't even exist anymore (Pulp, Smiths, etc..) are suddenly going to feel a sense of responsibility to end their own animosities and reform to take U2's slot, as if it's the music community's responsibility to join together & volunteer to 'save' Glastonbury

Let's await Monday's news before we list possibilities...i think that our resident U2-insider Digi mentioned on here that hints are that we may just miss out on the first leg of the US tour...so, Glasto will be the tour opener. that's probably the only reliable news of interest on here so far. Neil mentioned what seems like common sense - in that if they did start the tour in US pre-June 25, it would make it less likely they'd fly over on short notice then.

I'll be devastated if this doesn't happen. truly devastated. i had my Friday all planned and it had the makings of being one of my best days ever at Glastonbury. i'm still counting on that happening.

if not...Ash, whom i have word have already agreed to replace Stevie W. on Sunday if he calls in sick, are ready to fill in for U2 as well, with Kula Shaker on beforehand so they partner to fill up the full 2hr-plus time slot.

Yes, not having full details of his op and condition I think its wrong to guess. However I would be surprised if he is back within 3 weeks bearing in mind his doctor will have to declare him fit enough to get through a two hour energetic show, that will be tough for a 35 year old let alone a fifty year old. I'm hoping glasto will be the comeback show.. it's going to make a special show even more special and noteworthy.

I've decided what I'm going to do if Bono doesn't recover in time.

Feel gutted (no doubt thinking 'what if?' for many years to come), before trying to get on planning for the rest of the festival, enjoying all the other amazing acts on the line up before heading to see the Bootleg Beatles on the Friday night.

One thing guaranteed to make me feel better at a time I could be thinking 'I should be watching U2 now' is Beatles music.

I won't comment on any 'replacements' until one is announced, as I feel it's disrespectful to U2 and to the people who were really wanting to see them. More so than I.

Fingers crossed, and I'll work on that Stevie Wonder compilation whilst I'm crossing them.

I assume from what people are saying that Bono is currently residing in America? Otherwise, if they are heading to America then Ireland to England isn't a hard flight. They'll probably still play

If they don't, I don't imagine they'll get a big enough act to replace them, then a quick shuffle of:

Pyramid:

Flaming Lips

Hot Chip

Vampire Weekend

Other:

Dizzee Rascal

Florence and the Machine

La Roux

and then just add another at the bottom of the Other seems pretty reasonable.

I guess we'll know more tomorrow, and I know that one of the crews has been sent to Minneapolis but I suppose that doesn't really mean a thing as they have 3 stages and 3 crews. If Minneapolis is the first show,

i've had a bit more of a think about it and am less worried than i was when first announced. i think we'll find out monday (or whenever) that the sensible thing to do is to postpone all dates through Edmonton and just start off over here with Glastonbury. i'm an optimist. and i thought the only injury worries i'd be thinking about this time of year would be world cup-related!

i bet that's going to be a tough ticket to get for their short-notice/unannounced glasto warmup gig on wed night the 23rd in some club. it would have been nice for them to have had the 7 shows under their belt going into Glasto though.
