So the headliners are basically sorted and out in the open. The moment it's announced all of the Muse and Stevie threads (massive kudos to the guys that stuck their necks out and left them there while Emily was making negative noises about the Wonderman playing, by the way (Yes Tugger, I mean you!!!)) are full of people moaning that they don't like any of the headliners. Which confuses this bear of very little brain.

How can getting the biggest rock band in the world, the biggest name in funk and soul music and the band regularly named the best live band around be bad booking? I'm not saying you HAVE to like them but seriously, who were you hoping for? The sort of people who moan about bands like U2 headlining normally are the sort of people that go out of their way to be obtuse in their muscial taste (you know, love The Birthday Party but not keen On Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds; Favourite member of The Smiths was Mike Joyce; Prefers Whitsun to Christmas, etc.) and so I'm curious. What would have been good in your opinions? As you can tell I am very happy with the headliners and may (but still may not) check out all of them (SW is a definite, Muse are least likely as I've seen them before) but what would have floated the tragically hip's boats?

And before you embarass yourselves, remember we are discussing headlining the main stage at the biggest festival in the UK (Europe? Probably. The World? A lot would say so) so some of your overly cool suggestions will be pointless.

I'm not looking for a fight I just don't understand the negativity to what is clearly excellent booking.

Sir Paul McCartney would have been pretty boss. The Bowie rumours were really exciting, was absolutely gutted when I found out it wasn't going to happen. Radiohead never go a miss, especially with new material hopefully out soon.

U2 and Stevie Wonder have the credentials, but they're just not my cup of tea. There will be many, many other things to do and see though, so no complaints from me. Each to their own and all that, I just feel a bit underwhelmed.

As for The Smiths comment, I don't think Mike Joyce is even Mike Joyce's favourite member of The Smiths!

Thing is, all of what you said is tainted by your opinion of them. Just because you are pleased about it doesn't mean that everyone else is feeling the same.

Talent or musical status doesn't equate to likeability, personally. If I don't like someone, I don't like them, whether they are big or not. I am disappointed, but the solution is that I will do something else while they play.

I'm not having a pop btw, I just don't like the fact that people are getting on their high horse because others aren't as chuffed with the headliners.

As has been said Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Prince, Radiohead (not a massive fan but enjoyed them last time at Glastonbury), Bowie all would be preferable headliners in my tragically hip (i.e may not conform with your view) perspective. I agree with your sentiment but too assume everyone who doesn't like the three headliners are tragically hip or obtuse with their music tastes is a bit much. Very few people are saying they don't deserve to headline just that they are not really interested in seeing them.

I always find I'm never too thrilled about the headliners but I'm always happy to see them! There are bands I would really like to see headline - Radiohead, Oasis, Faithless are at the top of my list but isn't going to happen this year.

U2 - would like to see but will depend on who is on the other stages at the same time as to wether I'll see them. Same with Muse and Stevie Wonder. More than likely I will see all three, in particular, Muse who I used to be a big fan of.

Really for me there is more too it than the headliners so I'm happy but not thrilled with the announcements.

I am happily underwhelmed by the headliners. I may go to watch all three but that is highly unlikely. I don't enjoy life around the Pyramid stage so it suits that I won't be planning to spend the weekend there. My nightmare would be a killer line-up on the Pyramid stage. Definitely don't want that.

To be honest sometimes I don't want any bands I like to be appearing. They just get in the way :P

Just so long as the spaceman has a slot somewhere, I couldn't really give a bugger.

Seen U2 a few times, would watch them again if there's nothing outstanding anywhere else.

Not interested in Muse, just don't get it.

Stevie Wonder is an absolute legend, think i would have prefered an earlier slot just because I'll probably get bored and wander off after a while, but that's me not him and I'd never begrudge him the headline slot.

What would I prefer?

Bowie obviously, Tool instead of Muse would have been good, it's always going to be possible to think of a line up that could have been better, but this seems a pretty damn good start.

I'll shed no tears until I've seen who's going to headline the other stages, there's usually a couple each day that I'd watch, so it's still fingers crossed for Pixies/MBV for the other stage and a special Pink Floyd reunion in the glade for Sunday.

i think the headliners are perfectly adequate.

U2 massive coup, would be impressive in any festival headline slot

Muse one for the younger crowd, bit w*nky for me but I can see why people like them

Stevie a quality legends slot of a headliner, one to have a boogie on down to

Some of the requests on this thread really have made me laugh

Oasis, they did split up last year

Bowie, hasn't performed since the heart operation

Prince, very rare he makes a festival appearance, certainly would not play a UK festival

Led Zepplin, well they are never going to reform just for a festival

The Stones, no chance unless they are touring & your festival is somehow in business with the promoter of their tour ala Isle of Wright a few years ago.

Radiohead, maybe a possibility but only if they are in the mood & it is more of a case of them saying we would like to play your festival this year ala Reading & Leeds last year.

If you don't like them don't pay the rest of your ticket or go & see one of the other headliners instead.

My only criticism with Muse (and possibly U2) is that it was a little predictable. But if it pleases a lot of people then who am I to moan! They booked Stevie Wonder ffs! Its such a great booking and the guy is such an iconic songwriter!

For the 40th Birthday Saturday night we got rumours of rolling Stones, Bowie, Led Zep, Prince, Macca and instead we got a rent a festival headline band in Muse. It's not to say Muse are crap (tho not a big fan myself) but its just people expected something bigger and more legendary

I would like to say that I have still no idea who's headlining and will still have probably no idea who headlined when I leave the festival. The place is flippin huge, find something else to see or do, it will mean you leaving your camping chair at your tent and walking but I guarantee you'll have a really good time.

I still hope to get what I want but none of them are bands that would play the Pyramid anyway. Much more interested in the Acoustic, Jazz World and even the bandstands. That's where you get entertained.

    • Any festival is going to face most of the same limitations just by the nature of the event. It's not realistic to accommodate custom staging that extends out deep into the field. Trying to do so and trying to rebuild those kind of structures at the front of the field every day would severely impact on other performers, potentially even including other headliners. It'd also drive everyone involved insane. The most you can get away with is a basic extension that doesn't hide anything fancy. Remember that a lot of the time on these big choreographed shows, the stage extension itself will contain all manner of things to help the show beyond just being a simple platform. Also remember that these structures are designed to be assembled and operate on perfectly flat stadium or arena floors.   In terms of the stage itself - yes, the Pyramid is undersized (I believe 16 metres wide at rigging level). The de facto industry standard has become 20 metres and so it likely does need increasing and apparently there are plans to do so. But that only helps with artists that can largely confine themselves to the stage.   The Other Stage is already 20 metres - to be exact the Other Stage structure is the same model that Serious Stages provide to Reading, Leeds, Download etc for use as their Main Stage and there's nothing larger (at least off the shelf) in their catalogue. So no reason to change that.
    • Can someone remind me, on Harry Styles specifically - have we had any concrete info on him?   I don't personally remember saying much/anything on him, though I have just been away for a month, so could be forgetting something.
