What The Hell Did You ACTUALLY Want?

Alright, I've been resisiting posting on here/related topics for a bit, but bollocks to it, I'm going to.

Yeah, I'm not really excited about headliners generally, in all the years I've been going, I think I've seen one headliner (and that was only cos a mate dragged me along).

Generally I can think of very few big bands that I'm that bothered about seeing. Almost none, actually, now I think about it. Prince and er, that's it.That's not me being obtuse, it's just a fact.

Personally, I find the emphasis on the headliners a bit daft really. I'd rather have the money spread around a bit more equally and bit less focus on the oyramid which is, lets be honest, the most conventional, dullest, most boring bit of the whole site. To see the festivals relevance in the minds of a lot of people reduced down to three big names is pretty f**king depressing. You know what I'd love Archaos or the equivalent to get booked to headline, that would be superb Bit of excitement, bit of the unknown, bit of the unconventional.

But hey, enough of my yacking, whatdayasay, lets boogie? I'll see you in one of the far flung corners of the site where the real festival of contemporary arts is taking place.

And besides, Glasto can't have 3 legends every year they would soon run out. Maybe Led Zep for 2011? Each year needs to be outdone right?

Why can't people just accept that different people have different music tastes, some 'conventional', some the weird & wonderful? Doesn't make either view right or wrong, just makes the world a more interesting place. Glastonbury caters for us all (apart from the metalheads I suppose )

Instead of U2 I would have liked Coldplay or Radiohead. I am still hoping Thom Yorke will make an appearance. Not really bothered about Stevie Wonder.

i agree with this. as much as i'd like to see muse, there's bigger names out there who were surely available. i think muse need darkness though, don't they? say it was a toss up between them and pearl jam, pearl jam can easily get away with sunset.

Personally I'm disappointed with the headliners because aside from SW, U2 and Muse are very middle of the road, mainstream bands and it being a special Glastonbury I was expecting something truly out of this world. I don't want to get into the whole popularity/album sales crap because that is entirely meaningless after all you don't have to be at no. 1 in the charts for 51 weeks a year to be a great Glastonbury headliner. And most of the truly legendary Glastonbury performances have been from artists who don't sell their soles to the radio stations, which U2 and Muse do every time they have something to sell.

What I love about Glastonbury headliners is that they are so often bands/acts that other festivals wouldn't have the balls to book because they need to appeal to the masses. Muse may well be a great live band but the fact that they have played every festival going means they are hardly a special or unique choice of act. I feel the same about U2, OK so there are not many festivals that would be able to book them but them doing a festival was only a matter of time and is about they only thing they haven't done to publicise themselves and their new album (the whole BBC roof top gig really was shameful in my opinion) so again I think they are a little underwhelming choice really. If V or the Radio 1 big weekend had the drawing power of Glastonbury these 2 are the exact bands that they would book. For me I just expected the Eavis' to think outside the box a little like they did last year when booking Neil Young and Bruce and with Jay-Z and have 3 truly monumental acts for the 40th. I have no idea who they could have booked instead and I won’t be making suggestions. I just hoped for something a little different that I wouldn't see elsewhere, ideally bands I don’t hear 18 times a day on local and national radio. U2 and Muse I could have seen pretty much any time over the last 5 years so yes I am a little disappointed.

I am happily underwhelmed by the headliners. I may go to watch all three but that is highly unlikely. I don't enjoy life around the Pyramid stage so it suits that I won't be planning to spend the weekend there. My nightmare would be a killer line-up on the Pyramid stage. Definitely don't want that.

And what's wrong with Latvian Techno? The Sinclair Spectrum makes a superb synthesizer and banging the memory expansion module produces a range of drum effects!

Have to agree on this. I'm amazed at how it seems the majority on this message board seem to focus on just three bands. Then when those three bands that are chosen are not their favourites they just moan and moan. Fair enough in a way for first timers as that may be all they are focused on, but for anyone who's been before surely you realise that those three bands are but a small part of the festival.

With regards to who would we want to headline - off the top of my head, The Stones, Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, any of these for the saturday, and whom have all been possible at one time or another, even if just in rumours sense.

But i do think why people are really pissed off is because with Muse on saturday, .. its just the sunday tbc slot moved over, what everyone had known about for ages - i know the eavis' say don't listen to rumours blah blah blah but we all do, it would've been a much bigger shout to have Stevie headline saturday in my opinion.

I've come to terms with it now, just as long as there's some major acts on somewere else i'll be happy.

Might wander passed u2 if they play rattle and hum, and i'll defo be watching the wonderman, i've never seen the point in Muse - how can the the v festivals headliner from last year be shifted over to Glastonbury, i'll never understand it.

btw, please don't answer that, i really don't care about all the Muse lovers' opinions , had enough of them on here the past few days.

I think there has been a shift over the years from having acts that have some sort of interest/support for the theme of the festival, CND/Greenpeace etc, to just getting the big names in. The only act I saw last year on the bigger stages that even gave a nod to things green was Neil Young with Natural Anthem. There was a rather lengthy sermon about church building at one point though.
