A band bigger than U2...

Apologies if I'm being thick - but has Michael or Emily said that the Saturday headliner is going to be as big or bigger than U2, or has Neil gotten information regarding this? It could well just be that the Friday was the only day that U2 could play, and they will indeed be the biggest headliner...

I thought Eavis said U2 are "the biggest band in the world today, playing the world's best festival".

I think it was the Sun saying that there was someone bigger. But I might be wrong. And it's the Sun too ffs.

I cant help but think that alot of people are going to be disappointed by this "bigger than U2" hype for the Saturday headliner slot.

If U2 weren't playing in America, they most probably would be the Saturday night headliner.

Thinking back to last year, Neil Young was not expected to headline the Friday night slot, famously headlined by current bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Kings Of Leon, Oasis etc. in previous years.

Even so, I'm holding out for Bowie!!

Its interesting that ME has gone and announced this - perhaps he couldn't curtail his excitement that the 'biggest band in the world' has at last signed.

The Killers were quoted as saying 'one day we will be bigger than U2' or something to that effect

However the band bigger than the 'CURRENT' biggest band in the world

could be one of these (i hope its the one that doesn't still gig)

Agree that blur never really did it for me but how bout this for the SUnday night festival closer

TALKING HEADS.

I know it's never gonna happen but they are one of the best live band I have ever ever seen

I hate you. :P

I absolutely love Talking Heads (and have been lucky enough to meet David, Chris & Tina), but have never seen them live as Talking Heads. :P

I've seen David loads of times, I've seen Tom Tom Club twice, and even with Byrne doing his 'songs of Eno & Byrne tour' this year (which I caught three times and was fantastic) it's just not the same thing.

With all the reunions going on right now, it's thought that TH would be the biggest grossing of any that are possible (excluding bands with dead members), but I really don't think it'll ever happen - there seems to be far too much animosity between members, for whatever reasons. I interviewed Chris years ago now by telephone, and with just a mention of TH I could feel him tensing up. It seems like a very uncomfortable subject for him.

"It's thought" ... always wonder which zoloft-addled deity is making these predictions.

:P

For the record a Stone Roses and/or Smiths reunion would be bigger than something from Talking Heads in UK/Ireland. Or did you forget them? I can't see Talking Heads selling out Slane Castle for example.

It ain't my thinking - I've taken that from 6music, who did a poll (sometime this year I think) on which band most people would like to see reform.

And I think you might be hugely surprised - I'm pretty sure that within the UK Talking Heads would easily outgross (moneywise) Stone Roses if not outsell them for numbers, and quite possibly The Smiffs too. The whole world are not indie fans.

David Byrne manages to easily sell out big venues under the radar of the mainstream music media in this country (with his popularity rising steadily), so it probably passes people like you by. While those venues aren't arenas, if it was TH it would be on a whole new level - they'd very very VERY easily outsell the two bands you mention at any global level.

    • My understanding is that the queues returning back to the UK will be much worse (up to two hours) but the queue entering Lisbon isn’t so bad. That’s just from reading a few forum posts about it though so take it with a pinch of salt!

    • World Cup 2026: What is happening with ticket prices? - BBC Sport   Sounds like Infantino has been learning from his buddy if he's running around claiming its all sold out while quietly dumping tickets below face on assorted secondary websites.
    • Mac DeMarco also cancelled
    • I'm British so it very much would apply for me.   I mean, it's a moot point as I don't have tickets so will not be in town for this, but I've heard reports of lengthy queues and given I remember Lisbon Airport having a long queue at arrivals even pre-EES when I went in 2023, I seem to guess it might be quite the wait, depending on flight paths.   Certainly, the worst I've had pre-EES was a 45 minute wait for a stamp at Valencia Airport in Spain, where 4 flights to non-EU destinations in quick succession were placed one after the other. So I can't say I'm enthusiastic about what's in store. Or you know. Maybe I'm just overthinking it.
