Talk of a big storm in Mexico City means a 1am kick-off could now be a 7pm Sunday night start instead. Which if nothing else means the moral panic over the extended pub hours can be wound back a little.

I made a comment the other day about this being a bad idea based on Diego Maradona doing this before a Bolivia v Argentina World Cup qualifier in 2009 and Argentina duly suffered a 6-1 defeat, equalling their single worst ever result.

 

But apparently teams visiting Bolivia, which is a much higher altitude than Mexico, have been doing this regularly so... whatever.

 

Tbf I guess I was aware of this being a different challenge from following F1, which has a race in Mexico City and where its noted the thin air means the cars have to be set up differently or else they'd all break down.

FIFA have U turned, England's match kick off time back to 0100 BST, shambles of an organisation. Given the forecast it wouldn't surprise me if there were delays, taken a gamble I reckon as the alternative is all too difficult.

Well apparently FIFA have now uturned after both FAs said it was impractical to change the kick off time at this short of a notice and it'll be a 1am UK start after all. 

 

What a clear and well thought out communication strategy. 

 

... Oh yeah. And prepare accordingly for the phone calls I guess.

So if England had struggled against Cape Verde everyone would be saying how sh*t they are and how they won't go very far etc. But then Spain struggled against them too, so maybe Spain are sh*t too.

Feel like a lot of people are giving Cape Verde credit tbf. As they should. First ever World Cup for a nation that small yet they draw with Spain and Uruguay (admittedly a very messy Uruguay) and gave Argentina a proper game. Football's not always about the big fish in the pond.
