Checked in with my Portugal based colleagues this morning - they are heavy on the Ronaldo should retire side of things - He has been the king for the country but he certainly runs the risk of damaging his legacy if he tries to play on -  and perhaps his ego if he is simply not selected for the national squad.

Its annoying, cos as soon as there's a clear body of evidence for him retiring - he'll stink the pitch up being immobile and moany, and be actively hurting the team by holding up play and being annoying for a couple of games - he'll then stick in an absolutely ridiculous unsaveable header and justify his inclusion for another couple of caps. He's the beast who will not be killed!

Well big Ange is his team manager now...  not exactly a match made in heaven, I wonder if with that appointment Ange has to fit Ronaldo into his system - as that just wont work.

It did come across like Roberto Martinez didn't want to drop him. Even when Ronaldo was subbed off against Croatia it almost felt like it was done reluctantly.

Whether his successor will be as willing to pick others is another question. It is fair that Portugal seem to still be looking for the next top striker in their ranks, or at least next after Goncalo Ramos, but it's not exactly a long term solution to stick a 41 year old up top.

I'm constantly wondering what footballing achievement Roberto Martinez did to be alowed to manage a golden era for Belgium and then a close to Golden era Portugal...

I might have missed it

Great non goal that

The goal that actually counted was a good move too.

If Egypt hold on, that blows this side of the draw wide open, no? Brazil out, Argentina in extreme trouble, so could that make England the strongest team on that side?

I could understand Belgium - winning the FA Cup with Wigan and a decent first year of Everton at least was decent enough and he was fortunate it coincided with Belgium's face plant against Wales at Euro 2016. Tbf Belgium did get to the 2018 semi under Martinez, but after their dreadful Qatar, I was very surprised he got the Portuguese gig.

That shirt pull by Mcallister for the 3rd vs the disallowed goal shirt pull pisses me off much more than Balogun stuff.
