Trying to do so and trying to rebuild those kind of structures at the front of the field every day would severely impact on other performers, potentially even including other headliners. It'd also drive everyone involved insane. The most you can get away with is a basic extension that doesn't hide anything fancy. Remember that a lot of the time on these big choreographed shows, the stage extension itself will contain all manner of things to help the show beyond just being a simple platform. Also remember that these structures are designed to be assembled and operate on perfectly flat stadium or arena floors.

 

In terms of the stage itself - yes, the Pyramid is undersized (I believe 16 metres wide at rigging level). The de facto industry standard has become 20 metres and so it likely does need increasing and apparently there are plans to do so. But that only helps with artists that can largely confine themselves to the stage.

 

The Other Stage is already 20 metres - to be exact the Other Stage structure is the same model that Serious Stages provide to Reading, Leeds, Download etc for use as their Main Stage and there's nothing larger (at least off the shelf) in their catalogue. So no reason to change that.

Can't speak for Dua Lipa's, but Coldplay's was vastly scaled down compared to their stadium production staging though, and tracks were adapted to reflect that. MOTS tour had a full walkway 30m out to the B-Stage in the middle of the crowd, and two C-Stages.
Glastonbury didn't accommodate that at all and just had a very small walkway in front of the Pyramid stage, and (IIRC) a disconnected B-Stage.
 

Which re-enforces my point. Acts can adapt their stage shows if they really want. Most do, some don't want to.
Glastonbury might miss out on the odd act that doesn't want to slightly adapt, but so will most festivals.

Yeah, I think it's important to differentiate between a stage that's just a platform for the artist to walk on (which can be assembled fairly quickly and without too much difficulty), and the custom staging that you get in big productions where there's a whole world underneath.

 

Using the Eras tour as an example the stage extending out into the stadium field has all sorts - lifts that go up or down - down most importantly as this allows performers to enter or to leave the stage as needed. There's passageways to get from one part of the stage to another. There's what are effectively dressing rooms set aside for costume changes. There's spare instruments (and techs to look after them) so if something goes wrong above they can be swapped out in the space of seconds. There's even a track and dolly system running the full length of the stage so that Taylor can be moved from one end to the other faster than she'd be able to walk.

 

I don't know the specifics of the Madonna tour to the same degree but my understanding is that a lot of the same techniques are used.

While I don't particularly put much stock in that account as a source (never seen it before though, tbf), and I can pick a hole or two (see below) in what he says - the timing of it is a week before I had the Fontaines '27 stadium info (same stadium he says on there, Tottenham). The info, or part of it, matches up.

 

Holes I'd pick:

• I'd have to watch again but I THINK he says 'end of year' for Tottenham - not possible, for a number of reasons, though he's probably just got his words mixed up there. It's Summer '27, or that's what I've been told.
• He also says Glastonbury is/would be based on how the album does. That doesn't stack up to me, unless it was a 2028 thing. I suppose that could stack up, i.e a verbal agreement for 2028, but still seems a bit of an odd approach.
• I would personally still expect it to be 2027 alongside the stadium gigs, IF they are gonna do it, though I've still not got a Scooby when the album is gonna drop, only that the tour is due for Spring (or early) next year.

I didn't this time, but I've seen them before and just because you saw both that night doesn’t mean you can compare them. The Stones were great, but.you didn't think so and you went somewhere else looking for a good time and you found it. For whatever reason you didn't like it, but you were an outlier and all the reviews said they were great.

It was great, but I don't know why they continue to play Wide Lovely Eyes and Rings of Saturn, which are the weakest of the tracks off both PTSA and ST. Well, I do. It's cos they're about Suzie, so he can sing what he wants. They're the low points of the set. The rest is ace.

Thats just that from this year. Not even counting everyone else. Or even the willingness to spend $4 million on an ice skating rink that didnt get used in 2023.  Blood Orange was even able perform in the round inside of a tent without it hindering anyones experience. anyway

But but but Coachella, have a day off mate. It probably does drive them insane like the blood orange round stage you mentioned it stayed up the entire day so if you wanted to see anyone in that tent you had a massive area in the centre where you couldn’t stand. Its not unusual to want to have as much space for people as possible in the field

I suppose but when you look at the upcoming timeline:

• 13 dates in 2026 - I'm working on the assumption most of that will be a slightly revised setlist to get back into the groove, with maybe a new single thrown in; at least for some of them.
• Album five drops, tbc when exactly.
• UK/EU tour - Spring 2027
• Biggest ever dates, UK stadium/s - Summer 2027

Then I guess to pay devils advocate - you'd imagine they'll continue for the rest of 2027 - probably U.S circa September/October (I say that part with hope, cause I'll go to a few).

 

At that point - they could even continue it, if the had eyes on anything like Asia/Australia, and all of a sudden Glastonbury 2028 isn't that far away, in the grand scheme of things.

 

All that to say - I don't know, tbh.

To be quite honest - it all feels very up in the air.

 

What's to say Fender isn't 2028, and he's blurted it out. Like I keep saying, the info filtering through currently is very bitty.

 

Something more substantial will drop sooner or later.

 

IF Madonna was earmarked and it's taken a turn for the worst, who knows what the knock on effect of that could be as well.

Now Olivia Dean and (maybe) Madonna are out the picture, I do think Sabrina is the most likely option if they want a female headliner. But if next year ends up as Fender or Fontaines/Harry/Sabrina, that’s a very young crop of headliners.
