Have heard a few people say that Biden could have ran in 2016 but was blocked by Obama to allow Clinton to run...and Biden would have won cause they like him in the rust belt etc and we wouldn't have ever had a Trump president.

So, it's all Obama's fault.

Thought Biden decided not to run in ‘16 because his son had just died?

Seems to be a lot of finger pointing going on which is understandable, but ultimately it’s probably a mix of a lot of things, and also the unfortunate reality that there’s been a big rightwards shift in the world that really needs to be addressed, and Trump just being such a larger than life character who made politics ‘fun’ for a lot of people.

Its all ifs and buts. Seem to remember Biden was rushed through in 2020 to block Bernie Sanders. Sanders had been on Joe Rogan and got his backing and then the dem's panicked and every candidate dropped out backing Biden. It didn't feel like Biden was hughly popular and was on course to lose before covid.

I wonder if AOC will have a go in 2028? She'll be old enough, is very charismatic, a great speaker and streetwise and hugely popular amongst a certain part of the electorate...but would probably get trounced nationally. I kept hearing people complaining that Harris was a communist.

Still, she might have a go.

maybe both sides could campaign on issues? and by that I mean those that impact everyone, crazy idea over there I know

Trump did this. Alongside the nonsense he campaigned on cost of living, immigration and crime. Harris said there was nothing she would have done differently to Joe Biden.

She's a woman. She's non-white. The way things are she would indeed get trounced.

A shame, as I think she's great. I think Pete Buttigieg is great too, but there's no way he's getting voted in either.

We'll see where things are in 4 years. I suspect that the very people who voted Trump in will be hurting even more and maybe ready to try an alternative to populism.

Think I downplayed this just a couple of days ago, but one big problem the Dems have that seems to have swung the pendulum massively over the last few years is that the right have currently dominated the male podcast and influencer-sphere, with the likes of Rogan, Tate, Shapiro, Carlson etc all having huge viewership, and the left have got pretty much nothing on nearly the same scale to counter it, because a bunch of  guys telling guys that they’re awesome and superior and basically everything they want to hear is far more appealing than some guy telling them times are tough and a slice of reality. Whatever progress was made to move millennials to the left has been completely obliterated with gen z, and that’s a real issue. So many young guys have just gone full misogynist, racist, and red pilled.

Harry Cole from the Sun wrote an article about this before the election. Trump was advised by his young son Baron to do the Rogan podcast. Harris was invited onto the podcast but declined. It looks like the podcast subscribers are part of the electorate missed by the pollsters.

I mean...there was the price gouging thing, housing supply, child tax credits...but yes it was a continuation of Biden which in many ways was kind of good..huge stimulus to the economy in various ways...problem was the cost of living thing which in hindsight he should have done more to try and help.

yeah, could be chaos.

I imagine it will be someone like Gavin Newsom, or maybe Shapiro.

While at the same time saying it would be a "new start", which was extremely confusing considering she's been Vice President for some time

We just don't know if the Joe Rogan podcast thing made the difference. Maybe Trump was always going to win.

When you look at the numbers the polls were not that far off...Trump lead kind of in the margin of error of 50-50?

Rogan thing wouldn’t have made enough difference to change anything, it’s Trump’s audience, and imagine if Kamala had done it and then a few days later Rogan endorsed Trump - would’ve looked like an idiot.

I guess he might have inspired more men to get out and vote when maybe they wouldn't have bothered....?

It looks the polls centre point was about 2% off. so within the margin of error but consistently wrong the same way.

None of the centre right commentators I read thought Trump was certain to win just that that he had a chance. The closest was Andrew Sullivan in the Times who said Trump was unhinged but then listed all the reasons he might win that turned out to be correct.

Shapiro is jewish. There's already a seam of anti-semitism running through the right. They'd weaponise that if they needed to.

Still worth a go imo. If that's where people are, go talk to them. If stupid sh*t like this proves pivotal, why not?

Newsom or Shapiro for ‘28. Unfortunately just gonna have to stick to the tried and tested white guy and they’re both confident and good in the debate side of things so good counters to, presumably, Vance.

I don't think Newsom - California governor at a time when a lot of what they're doing is an easy target might not be the play.

But I guess we'll see who the brightest of the bunch are in 2027. I mean, when the Dems lost in 2004, I doubt that some young senator called Barack was seen as the saviour. Hell, I remember a Mock the Week episode from 2007 where they went "Well there's no way he'll win" and a year and a half later, there he was winning the election.

    • One problem could be that many of the hospitality packages are already sold out. Unless you’ve a media contact, media organisations normally get a hospitality allocation.
    • I agree on WA taking a year off in 2027. But if they got the call from R&L could see them having a similar August to what Fontaines are doing now. A few random shows + 2/3 other festivals. The festival/LN does seem to love them as well so there is a chance they take a punt.   I did see about Rodrigo potentially doing a stadium in Poland but no clue if that would be 2027 or 2028, I just can't see her at the Fest at all, seems too big in current climate.   If I were to guess the headliners next year I'd go with Fred Again/Foos/Capaldi/Olivia Dean/Biffy or Wolf Alice/Some Rapper, Tems?
    • Ulitimately the “Top 6” or top 2 on a day by day basis work as a collective   You could easily have Foo Fighters and someone else much weaker on a single day   As long as they add up to 3, whether they’re a 2 and 1 or both 1.5s it doesn’t really matter   The Florence- Chase and status day is basically a 1.5 and 1, hence it selling the weakest
