Never been before, are they all cash bars or is it the ticket system like other festivals?

Interesting question, might be something worthy of it's own thread but what do people think about cashless festivals?

It worked really well at Untold and Sziget. Instead of carrying cash which can be lost or stolen you have a swipe card which you can load with cash either through an app or at load points situated around the site. All the bars and merchandise stalls had terminals to use.

Obviously Glasto is a lot bigger than those festivals plus the infrastructure for a technology based system may not be there plus you have all the little arts and craft stalls which would prefer to deal in cash. It could work for festivals like Reading/Leeds etc where you have a dedicated arena area.

Token systems are designed to fleece punters, so that's a hard no from me.

A contactless system is probably less controversial, but is wholly reliable on its – likely bespoke, so untested at such scale - tech infrastructure and if goes down then there’ll be chaos.  Basically, the potential disadvantages outweigh any possible advantages.

What's the difference between a "walk in bar" and a counterbar?

The Clue is not in the name As some are changing this Year - but they will keep the Bar Name

Interesting.... do you think that is to help people have more places to shelter if weather not great?

its all been a fine balance and some of the locations has not changed in 30 years so what ' may have been a dead busy bar then may not be now ' No Bar Operator can stick up bars where they wish so its all been planned out well in advance and I know that there is intentions to change some of them - now staffing requirements are far different for " walk in bars" than Counterbars but there is always the waiting factor and weather will play a big part in it - its a no win situation and there can be a few solutions that have been tried at other events that may or may not creep into Glastonbury - one of them is a half and half - see image - that was at Hyde Park 'Proms in the Park ' so it meant that people waiting was in a covered area but was far faster than a conventional walk in bar where there would be tables and chairs - I have been stuck in Hospital so I cant say if this is planned but it went down well at Hyde park  - funny enough not because it was wet but it was searing sunshine so people were pleased they had some shade when they were buying their champagne at £65 a bottle - { and it was flying off the shelves } but they did get £5 back when they brought the bottle back.

I used the bars on site a lot more last year than the previous years, I think this was less to do with having more disposable income than it was to do with not be arsed to trudge back across site through the mud to fetch more booze from my tent. I plan to make use of them again this year as they are a great place to sit down for a while, they are filled with lovely cherry people and nothing quite beats a tasty cold pint. :)

Love those cherry people, hope they're back again this year, they really know how to get stoned...

We have bars like this at our local Summer Blues fest, and they're bloody efficient! All for this approach, hope it comes to Glasto

time will tell - there was other types { where people could sit down } but I  know that bar { which was a lot smaller then the others } Outsold all the other bars so they were certainly a big hit with the Customers - when I saw the price list { 2012 } I thought it would not be busy but it was chock a block. 2012-wbc-7.jpg

I've tended to use the bars more since switching from driving to coach (lucky in the coach sales three years running now).

May not be worth adding to a pub crawl as it is out of the way, and not laid out in a typical way, but I found the new bar in the wood a rather pleasant experience. Maybe it's the trees reaching out to me.

The new (or moved?) bar in the John Peel field was pretty good to, with a little DJ booth and some real ales :)

That was our first and last stop every day last year, as we walked from/back to our tent in Darble via The Wood. Did a great Bloody Mary!

    • Another note, if I didn't mention the food in the arena for main stage is right at the back. Bands wise they do very well for but as a festival so far they pros are outweighed quite heavily currently for me.
    • On another note for RIP as an event, there is some good things but there are so many things people going to UK festivals would hate and how far behind they are.  Consistent network and water, beer and pretzel like food is brought around to buy in the crowds. Topping up on the wristband is good. The camping and food arrangement is not good, you really need cooking kit. Water points inside the arena are bonkers, water points in camping are a faff unless you are close enough in general camp. Merch stands are crazy. You MASSIVELY need to think about your lidl shop for camping and try and do it so you've one stop. It's definitely worth it getting to a camping shop here, picking up a rolley between your mates and stacking it for the walk back....lidl is cheap though, not hard getting in but Thursday queues getting in and into the camping is mad. You have to register first for a wristband as well leaving any bigger bags behind so pull to a side if only two and do it separately. I was joining a WhatsApp group for solo camp so went with the flow but I've learnt. Had it been me or just two my tent would have been down much quicker.  Big final note, I got a fresh and black 3 man from decathlon before coming and put in bigger suitcase with my airbed and sleeping bag...do this. Take a smaller option for your clothes. If you go to Munich first, book your train to Nuremberg as far in advance as you can....very important!....it hikes crazy. Probably bettee overall for baggage sizes to do BA both ways but you do then need to go back to Munich after too. Use the B&B hotel hbf the night before....its very nice, comfortable, cheap and within 10 minutes of the station which also serves as a transport stop 15 minutes from the registration.  Get up literally like 5am with everything back the night before, shower and go. Transport is free anyway for festival ticket holders during the duration.  Would I just choose to travel in each day and back to a hotel?, on the basis of sleep and getting accommodation cheap enough for 3 nights i might just do especially if I picked the ticket up early enough. It doesn't feel like a festival in a normal sense....unless you are in general yoi have to exit on the paths outside the camping to walk down and in which also applies for getting water so have a stock up. Toilets are in the camping.
