electronic wrist bands

Didn't they try some sort of an easy pass-out wrist band last year?  Seem to remember hearing something about it for Worthy View residents.  Wasn't electronic but stopped the need for the 3 part ticket system.  Wonder if they'll expand that this year.

Aha....this may be it.

Thanks.

So how did the EPO bands work then?  Google suggests they didn't have RFID technology but may have had some UV strip that gets scanned so I can only guess that it records the exit/entry and only allows passage if there is a corresponding entry/exit on the system?

I think this is a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

Unless there is a need (logistical, health and safety etc) for numbers of people to be counted in/out at any given location, I can't see how the festival would benefit from them, especially considering they've managed over 40 years without.

Plus I hate the idea of being tagged in social media and someone knowing my exact location!

Some workers and volunteers have Easy Pass out if they're camped outside the perimeter for ease of access and I think you're right that  Worthy view residents had something similar last year as they had been complaining a lot (Imagine your husband/wife has a few too many ciders and storms off back to the glampsite with both your tickets, meaning if you leave you can't come back in!)  - but if everyone had that then people would easily be able to slip off wristbands and then come in with them.

From last year in my experience on the gates the biggest problem was of Fake trader tickets and loose EPO bands.

The ONLY good thing about these bands would be if they tracked the GPS of everyone inside the fence so could tell exactly who has been robbing tents.........and then lets everyone on site know who they are, what their photo is and exactly where they are on site.

Being a vigilante would be more fun than watching Coldplay, Adele and Muse

if you check you will see all the staff wrist bands all have EPO - I certainly was camping within the wall in a crew area  {Paines Ground} and it was a EPO

cant find the image but here is my 2014 one {same Crew Camp site as 2015}

I had a drink with a friend who was staying at WV and his also had EPO on it.

All the gates on and off the site have counters on them as we are having our photo checked, so I'd imagine they would have a fairly good idea of how many people are on site at any one time. They even have them going into the SE corner when the one way system is in operation at night.

I expect it'll happen eventually, but Glastonbury is behind the curve on these new fangled technology things for a few reasons:

  • The size - there is a lot of geographical area to cover with network connectivity
  • The scale - at peak, there are a lot of people coming in. If they rely on this tech and they can't let anyone in for a couple of hours, there will be huuuge queues.
  • Limited Benefits - Glastonbury really doesn't care about Facebook, limited number of in/out or any other daft things. It's not a day festival, it's a five day marathon.  All they care about is making sure people who have paid get in and nobody else.
  • Manpower- Despite the (fairly true) protestations that Michael makes that the money is spread very thin, there is cash around. Glastonbury has a large headcount and isn't forced to look at technological efficiencies in order to make the festival viable.  They can afford to wait until the technologies are well proven before jumping in.  They just don't have to.  Glastonbury has plenty of places make cuts before they would have to risk the entire entry process.

Personally, I think we're 5-10 years away from wireless technologies being stable enough for them to make the plunge;

I'd say it's unlikely to ever happen.

The system they have now works.

While electronic systems might get more stable, they'll always be the chance of failure - and the costs and risks from failure are extreme with so many people to deal with.

A paper system can't fail.

Why change and take on that extra risk, when the benefits from the system are minimal for the festival?
