I agree the chances of them doing Glastonbury is less than 0.1%.

I still think the gigs could happen this summer though. Just seems strange to release the albums first week in June, if they were just doing it to just sell as many albums as possible they would wait until Christmas.

They could easily do some shows either May bank holiday weekend or first week in June before Plant goes on his solo tour or in the middle of August when his tour is finished.

so... going to gigs is on a par with stamp collecting?

actually, I guess, for some people, that does seems to be the case. Life (and gigs) is just a tick list.

I think, as far as legends are concerned, seeing as The Beatles, or Hendrix, or Elvis will never get there, The Stones are as big/important as you can get

no, I get that, but rarity value makes no difference to whether a performance is worth experiencing or not

For anyone who hasn't seen either The Stones or Zeppelin, IF you're interested in what was, or is, 'relevant', The Stones have to be above Zeppelin (with reference to getoffmylawn)

yea, possibly.

The Stones was a pretty magic night. For a band that have been less than great, live, for a good few years, Glasto was extremely lucky/privileged to get The Stones as amazing as they were for that one joyful night.

I think the fact that the Rolling Stones is a brand now. I see young people everywhere and I don't want to judge but I bet most of them couldn't name three songs, but they'd probably still watch them 'cause it's the stones Init'. Led Zep on the other hand would just be a load of old guys with guitars to a lot more people I think.

Maybe. Without getting into Prince thread territory, I think Lez Zep are one of those bands with a VERY fervent fan base. Very fond of the statement "Even if you don't like them, you have to admit that their music is really, really good". They give the impression that everyone, everywhere just loves them SO much. Sure, they are a massive band, but I'm not convinced that the field would be more packed than for the Stones, even with the pent up demand. Do the under-35s like them that much these days? Sure, they sold a metric shitload of records in their time, about the same as the Stones according to Wikipedia's back of envelope (200 - 300 mil range), but are they as popular to a wide audience now.

What do you say Led Zep fans. How old are you all?

BTW, I'm not keen, but I understand that's a sample of one. There are people who don't like The Beatles, and they're quite big.

You should see the amount of people I see around uni in Led Zeppelin t shirts. I'm sure not all of them are actually huge fans of course, but they'd have the same "well I probably should see them" factor as the Stones. Maybe not quite at the same level of the Stones, but certainly bigger than a lot of other viable headliners.

    • We head out in the morning. Couple of nights in New York then up to Boston. Enjoy the games lads and hopefully we get some great football to take our minds off the whole shitshow off the pitch.
    • White Stripes/QotSA at Harewood 2007, Tramlines (and Blue Dot, same weekend) in '23, and Elbow at Jodrell Bank '13.
    • Yeah exactly, the shock moments, group layouts, etc all end up playing out differently once you get into the tournament. However you tweak it, you don't predict shocks.
