i gave a number of reasons - the most important being that she's a massive mainstream artist, would lead a big singalong of well known hits and the organisers have said she's on the list.

obviously metallica are legendary metal artists....but when have you ever seen metal on the pyramid.

good lord.

How many well known songs does she even have? I've just checked her setlists and I know four songs. Metallica have as many well known songs as that.

If you used that last point, then no festival would ever move forward. There'd never have been a rap headliner, never have been an R&B headliner, etc.

In fact, when has a straight up pop artist like Adele headlined, except for Beyonce? Using your logic, she should never have headlined anyway.

I actually agree with you that Adele, if she was up for it, could headline Pyramid. Easily. No discussion needed.

So do I, but I just don't see her as any more suitable than Metallica.

maybe not in this country, but in the US the genre was as mainstream as you could get from about the time of the success of Pyromania in 1983 (up until then AC/DC, Ozzy, Scorpions really being the only mega-selling metal bands in the US) up through the first year or two of the 90's when grunge kicked in. Many many metal bands were regular arena touring regulars for the span of a few albums, albums that sold more worlwide (obviously biased because of the size of the US market) than the likes of Kasabian could ever hope for...

now obviously that's a sign of American culture/tastes too, interstate-driving 'rawk' radio culture...

Even though headlining the Pyramid is obviously a prestigious slot and for a lot of bands the holy grail in terms of live performance, it's not like its immune from iffy bookings or for people beneath the honour to be allowed to do it.

For me its not about sales so much as it is an overall cultural contribution, about whether you've carved yourself out a position in the media landscape that resonates with people. It's about cachet.

As an example, earlier talk of Phil Collins' huge sales still, fir me, wouldn't justify them booking him.

With that in mind, Metallica absolutely should be given their shot and they're 100 times more worthy of it than Mumford & Sons or Kasabian.

Actually I've just realised, I'm not a metal fan at all, I've only been to one metal gig in my life, and my favourite music is the stuff that tends to headline Glastonbury (Muse, Radiohead, etc.) and I want to see Metallica, as does everyone I know that's going. That seems as good a reasoning as you're using, so I'll say that every single person going wants to see them.

Great post. Glastonbury should always be trying something different. Of course, like with Jay-Z and Beyonce you can guarantee that someone...

Jay-Z & Beyonce are big mainstream artists. Jay-Z was a gamble though, and he really only just about pulled it off. Beyonce got a big family crowd and went down OK, but it was hardly a legendary set and pretty cheesy with the stuff she had on the big screen.

I'm pretty confident Adele would do OK though, she has quite wide appeal.

Finally, no, my logic is that metal is a niche genre that despite being around for donkeys has never been prominent at glatstonbury, which is essentially a pop festival and has had loads of pop all through it's history.

2. I'm not a hip-hop fan, but I'd see OutKast. I'm not a dance fan, but I'd see Daft Punk. Point I'm making is that just because people aren't big fans of a certain genre, doesn't mean they won't like the odd act (and if so, it's likely to be a huge one such as Metallica), and will write off the entire genre as something they won't enjoy. I like the odd metal act (Sabbath, SOAD, Tool, Deftones, Mastodon, for example), don't dislike Metallica, and think they'll put on a brilliant show, and that's why I'll see them.

The thing about Adele, from what I have seen, is that she connects with the audience. Now some artists can connect with any audience, and some with only their audience. It remains to be seen if Metallica are the former or the latter.
