Can everyone stop giving Autoinflate the time of day? The guy is clearly so high on his own opinion and incapable of implying rational in any of his arguments so why even bother? my argument is hardly irrational....glastonbury doesn't do metal, yet suddenly it does in the top slot, which might not be popular with most people who go year after year...

Surely Glastonbury as a festival of performing arts it's the perfect place for metal music. It is after all a performance! Just as pop music, circus performance, stand up comedy, burlesque are all forms of expression and art and stuff!

well yes, but as far as music goes, what i've observed at glastonbury is that since its inception all kinds of genres have emerged, many of which have attained a prominent status at the festival....to my mind it's the genres that are not only popular but also represent good taste that have done so, metal not included.

Most people look back at the 2007 line up on the main stages and laugh their fucking arses off. You don't like Metal, we get it, it doesn't mean your taste dictates the validity of music as a whole. I'm not even a big metal fan, I like lots of genres, but my knowledge of metal is pretty void but I love attending Metal gigs live because the is a certain energy to it. And in case you're wondering the crowd at said gig has been a lot more respectful and polite then the twats I've encountered at Arctic Monkey gigs.

Some of the posts in the last 5-10 pages are ridiculous.

All the tickets have sold. If the headliner was anyone from Metallica to One Direction to Kylie Minogue the crowd will still be made up of a combination of the same ~130k who are already attending. Just because Metallica is playing doesn't mean everyone's going to magically start throwing piss and killing each other, just like how if One Direction played the whole of Glastonbury wouldn't magically turn into a stampede of 12 year old girls.

Just because you don't like metal, doesn't mean "it's shit". It means it's not for you. Just like I'm bouncing up and down to see Dolly Parton, many of my fellow metal heads would shoot me down and tell me I'm a fool. It's personal preference.

Actually I disagree, the same people might be there but people behave differently to different types of music - are you going to tell me that the same feeling pervaded the crowd before and during the Stones last year as at Mumfords? Of course it wasnt. In the early 90s you couldnt go down the front of the stages at all without trepidation (speaking as a tiny girl), there was moshing to everything, even bloody Bjork at the NME stage - do I want to go back to that? No. As I'm old and can't be arsed with it.

Indie pop and more alternative stuff has always had a massive presence of glastonbury, with many headliners across many stages coming from this stable. During that period it was particularly popular, so the bill reflected that. Much like in the 90s the festival had a prominent dance theme.

There has never been a prominent or even detectable metal theme, hence the dubious reaction to the metallica booking. At best they should be playing the other stage, as apparently they were meant to be (and if the stars align still will be!).
