Metallica 2014

Metallica are playing but which stage is still unknown. That's the deal isn't it.

If they're playing, I'm pretty sure they're currently in the Saturday Pyramid headliner slot. If Prince comes back to Glasto that mighty change tho.

That's how I believe things to be, tho I'm not 100%.

I would guess that Metallica would only take so much "you're headlining - no you're on other - no he won't do it you're headlining again - no he's just rung up will you switch again" before they say "bollox to this."

yup. I'd guess that how much they're able to do that would depend on Metallica's wants and desires.

But it might well be the case they're not hugely bothered where they play, because the rumours of them on the Other suggests they're not too bothered.

I may be wrong, and I know Eavis really really wants Prince, but there has to be a point where he says, "I need your final answer."

Yep, they'll be that end-point somewhere.

I'd say that it'll be before the resale if Metallica are playing and able to be announced, but it could stretch a lot further if Metallica have to remain unannounced.

BTW, while I don't know if they could be able to be announced or not, various things I'm hearing and not hearing are suggesting to me that they won't be announced at the time (presuming it's before the end of April) of the main line-up announcement.

I was thinking that to announce without saying who the saturday night pyramid headliner is would be very odd, but actually if they did that it would probably just lead to massive speculation in the media and press for everyone involved...so maybe not soo odd?

it would be odd, but this scenario is one of the few times it would actually make some sense and work OK-ish.

But anyway, if we go back to (I think it was) 2000, there was no announcement of the line-up until you arrived on site I think.

I can remember that the Stereobores headlining was well rumoured, but also far from 'known for certain'. They certainly weren't announced until very close to the fest.

Stereophonics was definitely a late announcement even if they'd announced the rest of the line-up. I can't remember all the details now but I do remember about Stereophonics; they were announced late because they were headlining V.

lineup announcement is made - Saturday headliner is TBA - everybody speculating "who could it be? Prince? Metallica? Fleetwood Mac?". arrive at the festival. get given a lanyard and scramble to the Saturday lineup page and see that it's… Mumford & Sons, making their big live comeback after their lengthy nine month hiatus

I remember this! The rumour that it was the Sterilephonics had been going around leading up to the festival, but I still harboured hopes that it wouldn't be them, and excitedly tore into the programme as soon as we got through the gate, only to discover that it was, indeed them. Ho hum. I loved it when you found out the line-up in the programme, though, and wish it were possible for it to be that way again. Sadly, iin the digital age we now live in, that would be an impossibility, I imagine.

Yep it was 02, just done a bit of digging. Thought it must be as I remember a feeling of disappointment reading through the programme that year and I didn't go in 2000!

2000 was Bowie and I'm pretty sure that was known.

In theory I would love that. But in practice, cos I'm old and out of touch, I'd open the programme, look through all the stages and think "not heard of any of them - apart from the last 3 on every stage."

Whereas now I look at the line up and/or rumours, have an explore, wait for people on here

who tend to have a history of liking similar stuff to me (and Floorfiller who, despite having a love in for timberlake, likes some good stuff too ) and it gives me a chance to at least have 2 or 3 bands in the daytime to check out if I fancy rather than being totally blind.

But yeah, it'd be ace if we had no idea till we got there.

Must admit, I'm the same. The amount of new music I've discovered from exploring the line up all of the bands on the smaller stages in advance over the years is amazing.

Having a few evenings of soundcloud/youtube going through all of the stages is actually a highlight for me....... I need to get out more don't I?

Very much agree with this. I love investigating as much as I can beforehand to pick out a few bands to watch. I've seen a few bands I'd never previously heard of purely on people's recommendations.

Without seeing the line up I probably would have missed some excellent sets.

But maybe discovered someone else that was on at the same time? If there was no one I'd heard of, I'd pick a stage at random and stay there for 2 or 3 acts.

A good point, if I look at The Joy Formidable who I saw on a recommendation, the other options included Don Mclean, The Corresponents, Caitlin Rose, Crystal Fighters (live) LIVE - ARRGGHH!, Jah Wobble or The Wombles.

Now I'm sure they were all fine and dandy but TJF were superb and I'd have been gutted to miss it.

If TJF are as good live as their album then you were lucky see see them. Love the album.

Could Metallica sub Pyramid? It would avoid 1) Over crowding problems at a smaller stage and 2) Exclusive headlining deals at Soni. They would get great TV coverage still. With a slot as long as the headliner (who could arguably be a smaller act because of this) it might solve problems of a poor Saturday night headliner.

Why would you place such a popular band with such an extensive back catalog in any slot other than Headline? Also how does putting on a smaller band to end the night 'solve' the poor headliner situation.

When said massive band is exclusive as a headliner at another festival. (I know we don't know if this is the case or not, but we don't know it isn't).

And the headliner problem is solved by having a massive band on before the headliner as well as a potentially substandard headliner.

Which band would want to go on after Metallica? The only band that I think that could carry it off (and did, at MOR in 1991) would be Acca Dacca.

I mean, it's your first headline gig at the world's biggest festival, you are going out to a crowd of thousands, with many that number that times over watching live on television and you are going on after Metallica.

I don't mind Ed Sheeran, but if we're talking folk who can follow Metallica ( I'd say this isn't as difficult a task as some think, but for argument's sake, I'll stick with this ), he's not one who would come to mind for me.
