I'm particularly wary of the Rolling Stones crowd. How many people will be there to watch the Rolling Stones, and how many will be there just so that they can say "yeah, I saw the Stones"?

hehe, i work a couple of days a week at an Art School. It's full of what I suppose are probably hipsters. I'm surrounded by them.

But I choose what I wear based on the hope that it will make me look "cool" - which is to say reflects my personality and, also, I hope, makes me look attractive. I would have thought a large minority, if not the majority, do the same.

So many aspects of taste are normative and when you are part of a group it is often impossible to distinguish between the group's aesthetic and your own. Metalheads dress like metalheads because they think it looks good, not because it is a uniform; even though, to an outsider, that's just what it is. I'm guessing the same is true of hipsters. What I don't understand is the way the word "unique" is being bandied about in this thread - hipsterism seems the very opposite of uniqueness, the nadir of individuality.

As to pursuing "cool" interests I wouldn't be too surprised if that also described most weekend soccer players, most of the surfers in Newquay and quite a few of the customers in Mountain Warehouse buying ski gear. Many of us pick our interests, in part, because of the social aspects; is that so bad?

You don't like people becuase you think they care too much (or simply more than you) about their appearance?... I think that'll be more than just 'hipsters'

There's a line, isn't there? I think, for me, it's a bow tie. I reckon that does mark you out as a bit of a tool. Unless you're working as a croupier

I'm not really sure why you can't understand that the sub-genre of a hipster is the opposite of indviduality. Any sub-culture is; the members are influenced by the same things and into the same forms of behaviours and those influences lead them into choosing to like/dislike the same things or dress ina similar way. Yes for this particualr sub-culture it's ironic since the original motivation was to be different, but what's hard to understand about that?

When people have asked me if I'm going to see Rolling Stones and I've said no, they have actually said "oh but it would be good just to say you've seen them." People say that all the time when they ask if I'm seeing the one big headliner that they've heard of and I've said no.

Why would I go to see a band just to say I've seen them?!

That's what I said - that I didn't see how the word "unique" could be applied to a hipster or any sub-culture member.

The truth is the hipster look is what is popular with A-level and university students at the moment, and they make up a large portion of festival-goers, even at Glastonbury.

If you are looking for pretentious annoying douches then you won't be able to do it just by looking for hunter wellies - too many people will be wearing them.

I think it's a waste of time trying to ascribe to motives to people you don't know. Pretty much all young people at least subconsciously picks their dress-sense, music taste, interests etc to make themselves seem cool. There is no way to tell whether they 'actually' like the music or clothes they do, or whether they are doing it to look cool - and to be honest it isn't either/or.

So complain about actual behaviours, not appearances.

Doesn't the 'sub-culture' just move with times? Hipster is an awful term that has become rife in the past few years', yet when I was at uni ten years' ago it wasn't even a term anyone knew; at that time it was 'indie'. Has indie now gone then and been replaced by hipster?

Either way, this whole thread is rather backward as hipsters seem to be - generally - left-leaning and isn't that was Glastonbury is built out of? (no nuclear, Greenpeace etc)

I have to agree that there is a 'trend' for being hipster at the moment, particularly with 14-18 year olds.

Bestival was full of them - lads wearing snap backs, short shirts buttoned to the top with the sleeves rolled, jeans rolled up with boat shoes. But if they are having fun and not harming anyone then fair do's?

Except when they shout LADS and BANTS all the time and only taking drugs because its 'cool'. Thats annoying.

I just get peed off at people who just go to see a band just to be seen watching the band for the kudos (then talk and take pics all the way through) - KOL gig last year was worst case I have ever seen of this.....except when one particular song played and then it was back to normal
