Pyramid tent

Ok after a pub argument I need to know what the populace say. Two of my mates were saying that since the Pyramid stage is structure with a flexible cover, that it is therefore a 'tent'. I baulked at this and begged to differ.. but who was right? Surely a tent needs more that this simple criteria to qualify?

Tent

noun

  • a portable shelter made of cloth, supported by one or more poles and stretched tight by cords or loops attached to pegs driven into the ground.
So
- Not very portable. In fact the frame stays in place year round
- Poles. No poles it's a space frame.
- Tightened by cords attached to pegs. Nope.
So I would say, while there are a lot of tents used as stages at Glastonbury. The Pyramid is not.

I'm not sure what they would call the Other/Park in the industry. Portable stage or something like that.

I'd say FloorFiller's definition is a good one, and a lot simpler to remember.

And I have to remember not to be a smart ass with a few drinks on board. :ninja:

My good lady has pointed out that even the Pyramid stage aka 'tent' is portable inasmuchas it could feasibly be loaded onto a number of lorries and transported elsewhere. I suppose you could say the same of the Eiffel tower.. given enough lorries. Mind... cover it with some tarps and you have the Eiffel Tent....

The (new) Pyramid stage was designed as a structure that can be dismantled and transported. The Eiffel Tower was not.

So it's really not an equal comparison.

I think my mate would claim that it doesn't matter if the audience were inside or outside: the stage itself is a tent...

The Pyramid structure is permanent but only gets covered in May in preparation for the festival.

Undoubtedly the Acoustic Stage is a tent - audience and performers inside.

nope, it is NOT a permanent structure. It was specifically designed as a structure that can be dismantled and moved - as told to me by the guy who designed & built it.

Since it's been built it's been taken down for a while at least once, when the council got sniffy about it (during the last fallow year).

OK. I agree it's not a permanent structure in the strict sense that it can be taken down and re-assembled. But generally the framework is left standing and only covered as the festival approaches..

So in the context of the questions as to whether it's a tent or not what would your view be Neil?

I think on balance that if the audience is inside along with the performers it's a tent - so the Acoustic Stage at Glasto is inside the Acoustic Tent.

The Pyramid Stage may well be covered but the audience is outside so it's a stage.

The permanence is different. Tents, like the 02, can be left up permanently, just as I could choose to leave my tent up in the garden all year if I wished.

Stupidly I left my old festival gazebo up permanently in the garden but, sadly, it's now a ruin having collapsed under the weight of recent snow.

    • Was volunteering at the Women’s Cricket World Cup at Southampton yesterday. Was great fun.
    • Definitely see this as being 'weak' on paper but could see a few bumps up from previous sets at Download (Don Broco, Neck Deep etc).
    • Very different in terms of time of game,  yet remember how excited I was before the first game in Euro 2016 having grown up not sure I would ever see wales in an international tournament. That day scraped a win against Slovakia and was just happy to see wales score and win at a tournament, little did I know we would finish in the top 4. Hope Scottish fans get the same experience.
