Most of my fave gigs have been in mid sized to little venues where bands can't really do a decent production. However, I do think when you get to the arena/headlining or subbing festivals side of things there is a little bit of an obligation to do a bit more on the production side. It just makes it all feel a bit more special. However, some acts can still pull off big shows with little to no production. SOAD at Download is prob my joint fave gig ever and they have virtually no production and my mates who can hear better than me say The Cure were the band of the festival this year. I just can sort of understand why people get a bit downhearted when there is no production and to be honest none of the headliners this year had that special a light show.

so R&L can offer more money than a promoter can offering a band also a headline slot at a dual festival plus a 3 night stand in their home town on a 220k sell out? i bloody doubt it.

so you don't think that the world's biggest promoter can out-bid a small time guy* operating from the arse end of nowhere**, then?

(* no offence meant to Simon)

(** no offence meant to Manchester)
