Indiana State Fair tragedy

Glastonbury has a wind limit on the main stages/tents, if the predicted windspeed goes above a certain mph then meetings have to be held over the safety of the site.

I was at Bearded in 2009: http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/beardedtheory/2009/photos-Tornado-BeardedTheoryFestival2009-PB.shtml and frankly can't believe that the Indiana State Fair was allowed to go ahead if the weather was predicted :(

The weather here in Belgium today has been absolutely shocking. After a few days of dry weather and early this afternoon when it was lovely and warm and sunny, the ground was rock hard. I was sat in my office this afternoon and my colleagues and I watched the sky turn from blue to black in the space of half an hour, and the rain came out of nowhere- it was predicted but not as heavy as it actually was, I was utterly soaked walking 200 metres to the bus stop. I'm glad I left when I did otherwise I would have been caught up in dreadful, dreadful traffic trying to get home- so much of Brussels has flooded and I didn't pass a single road without a massive puddle on it. It has been raining on and off since 5pm this evening and when the rain comes it's been torrential.

Nothing compares to what's gone on at Pukkelpop though- those poor, poor people

Glasto has mercifully so far avoided a tragedy of this scale. However, its been close to experiencing serious problems once or twice . . .

Pyramind Stage burned down in 1994, days before the festival.

Other Stage sank in the mud of 1997.

Robbie Williams playing in 1998.

Serious overcrowding of 2000.

Then there was the biblical deluge on Thursday night 2005 - high winds, huge electrical storm overhead, heavy rain. The morning revealed East Pennards flooded in NE corner, flooding in the market areas, river flowing across the site. It also knocked the power and bands were delayed on the Friday morning. One of the Circus Tents had been struck by lightning and was ripped all down one side.

I'd imagine Health and Safety willl be even more stringent at festivals in the UK now, although I do believe that we are pretty well looked after at most fests over here.

Loads of people left, the site was a mudbath anyway. The something else tea tent was destroyed, main stage gone. Music continued in the dance tent with a hole in the roof and the beer tent became the main stage with Goldblade giving a super performance in the evening.
