The thing that has completely passed me by, and which I cannot related to at all, is the apparent obsession people have with where on the bill a band should play...are they "big enough" to play three from the top or whatever. Really, who gives a fuck? If you like them and they play, great. Why the obsession with where on the bill they are? Does it matter?

I wouldn't want, say a new band like Savages, to be given an hour and a half on the Pyramid, and have The Cure play half an hour somewhere I'm unlikely to see them. Surely if you like the act it matters more? Arguably the obsession with positioning is to do with timing of sets.

Clearly because this is a headliner thread and there's one headliner slot let. So if people are keen to see e.g. Gaga, then they know they're unlikely to see her if Fleetwood are playing.

You kind of coming across like on of those people who spends the entire festival complaining because he saw a group of young gilrs with 'Bristol Uni 2010' hoodies on, talking about how they loved the Scissor Sisters.

Really, one headliner slot left? Are we that confident that the other two are going to be a reformed Pink Floyd and Radiohead? (OK, Arctics , and the Stones) I am not confident that both them will play at the moment

I hope Gaga does get the slot, it will be a nice balance of acts for the festival. Don't need both the Stones and Mac headlining IMO. I wouldn't be at Gaga mind, but I think she would be a good choice for the Sunday slot, the locals would lap it up, and Eavis would be in good books for another year. It will get a lot of press coverage as well.

Anyone, back to the key topic. My view is that the Eavises should actually take heed of past performances and crowd reactions. Leonarc Cohen in 08 was widely seen as one of the greatest Glastonbury performances of recent years. Stick him up, headlining Pyramid on the Sunday and you will see an epic show.

Surely the 'Headline' slots are a matter of the Eavii negotiating a knock down price which is compensated for by massaging a band's ego and guaranteeing a TV slot and resultant publicity.

There were triumphant exceptions like Leonard Cohen who didn't want TV coverage as a result of previous financial rip offs

Can you not see how certain acts are better at certain times in certain places? I'd love to see Daft Punk but not particularly at 11am in JPT.

Yep don't disagree with that, but I also think Gaga finishing the festival on Sunday would get a simlar reaction, albeit with a completely different crowd. She would get a great crowd reaction on the Pyramid I reckon

We also need to consider the crowd on a Sunday night, it's a real party atmosphere, with loads of locals with their free entry expecting to be entertained with the 'best' of the current pop acts around - trying not to sound patroninsing, but failing, most of them would not appreciate the likes of Cohen in my opinion, much rather have a massive pop act in front of them. In all honesty, having Bjorn Again headlining on the Sunday would get a brilliant reaction, and be a great close to the festival

The term "epic' is all in the eye of the beholder of course.

Personally I think Artic Monkeys and Rolling Stones would be great choices but Fleetwood Mac.. not so much. Sunday night is about a huge act that both young and older fans will enjoy which is why it's usually quite a mainstream act.. You wouldn't find many youngsters wanting to watch Fleetwood Mac. I'd personally prefer Gaga.

However couldn't Fleetwood headline Pyramid and Gaga The Other Stage?

Before that, you had Muse at a time before they were as big as they are today, Moby, Stereophonics, Ash, Skunk Anansie. I'd hardly call those bands that both young and old would be equally as interested in.

On a personal note, I don't like this whole thing of a certain slot should be a certain type of band playing. It's bullshit and narrows down the range of acts that can play because they don't fit the criteria of a certain slot.

Why does everything have to fit a certain formula? Hardly exciting is it.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think the 'mainstream Sunday' thing has mainly come about because Michael got fed up with getting hassled on the street by locals about some of the bands he'd served up for those locals with Sunday tickets. If I'm remembering rightly, firstly it was that they didn't think Basement Jaxx was a big enough replacement for when Kylie had to cancel, and then Muse was the final straw (they pissed off loads of normal ticket holders too, prior to the event; these forums were full of posts from people who didn't think them big enough before they played; tho afterwards the opinions were different cos they nailed it).

The Neil Young/Specials double bill was great, and the Blur/Nick Cave/Madness triple that Sunday was also top notch.
