The world's richest woman says that the poor should work harder and spend less time in the pub.

Yeah, well ... the poor don't inherit a fortune which means they don't need to work at all. And neither are they able to make gambles with the money they've not inherited, that just happened to have paid off via luck for this despicable woman who's suggested that Australians should work for $(AUS)2 a day.

I was just talking with my daughter about this. On the news they said one girl was in a medically induced coma. I explained that back in the "old days" psychiatric patients would be kept asleep as a therapy. Sleep is a good healer. I was touched when I watched an interview with the French police and the guy in charge said "we are not going to ask her questions, she is only 4 and in shock". What an awful thing to see at that age or any age.

Kids are strong things and hopefully with the right care she can be healed. THe younger the better with this type of thing they was saying.

i did not realise that. I remember as a student mental nurse having a number of patients on "sleep therapy". I suppose it sounds obvious really.

my old man was in an induced coma for a total of 11 weeks about 15 years ago, following a major heart attack ... they did try waking him after about 8 weeks but he started thrashing around, a sign apparently that the body is still traumatised. So the re-induced a coma for a few more weeks, and he was woken calmly that time.

(he's still going now, just about).

Fabrice Muamba was put into a coma too - tho I was surprised at how quickly they took him out of it again (I guess, at least in part, a consequence of his much younger age). I think it's pretty much standard practice for major body traumas of various kinds.

I took Barry's words to mean simply that because some kids do manage to get past early-year traumas, he hopes that she's one of them.

There's no presumption there, just a positive hope.
