U2 tour in chaos

I with Tugger, i wanted them to play and still hope they do. At first i was just ,ok, i saw them at Wembley and wasn't overly impresses, but the thing is i love some of their stuff and thought that Glasto could have been a moment. Lets just hope it goes ahead. There must be some heavy head scratching going on at the Eavis's with it being so close. I mean, how do you top that name, lets not forget U2 was the first headliner on the sheet so to speak, this attracted the 40th attention the fest wanted and now Friday for me looks a little bit slim. Its going to take a lot to liven it up now.

U2 will play, I had a dream last night about watching at them at G, so it will happen. :P

They were brilliant btw :P

If, for some reason my dream doesn't come true then The Smiths or Pulp would be awesome.

seriously, i'm in bits over this - it doesn't matter who steps in, if they could match up to U2's stature they would be playing already

some of the suggestions to replace them would be hilarious if the situation wasn't so f**king tragic

I haven't really thought of who I'd like to play in their place, because I'm pinning all my hopes on Bono making it in time.

I really will be gutted if they don't make it. :P

Whilst I'm not a U2 fan and was only planning on watching a little bit of them just so I could say I have done, I am a bit upset at the prospect of them having to pull out. Getting U2 was huge for the festival and obviously a hell of a lot of people were looking forward to it.

I also think Bono is an idiot but I wouldn't wish any harm on him, hopefully he'll make a recovery in time to play.

While, I too would be disappointed if they don't make it, and think they represent a massive spectacle that I'd love to see, I think you're being a touch melodramatic. Surely the biggest Glastonbury disappointment ever would be the festival being denied a license in 2001 after the events of 2000, or the riots in the 80s, or Jean Eavis passing away shortly before the 1999 fesitval...But, yeah it would be a shame if U2 don't play, let's just apply a sense of perspective, hey?

its nice to see people wishing him well at last . when this story broke all you had at the start of this thread seemed to be that people were happy that some bloke had had an op and couldn't do glasto .

you go on about the glasto spirit but it was seriously lacking earlier. :P

its not like the haters dont have a shitload of other stuff to see.

im not crazy about some of acts playing, but im happy for both my real life and virtual friends that they get to see them.

throwing a party cos 80,000 people dont get to see one of the biggest acts on the planet at the best festy in the world seems the height of childishness

come on bono, pull through it and deliver the legendary performance that was on the cards - get well soon

I wasn't planning on seeing them, but for selfish reasons I want everyone there to put on a great show-if 80k people go see U2 and they do the business, it only helps the atmosphere around the site. The best thing about Glastonbury IMHO is the atmosphere, the collective feeling that everyone there is having an amazing time, and a vintage U2 performance would only have helped.

If he does make it now, it'll be a *real* buzz.....

Maybe they could get Robert Plant in and do an all star band type of thing, get Macca up for a tune or two, Page, Matt Bellamy, Slash (if he's around) etc etc.

Still got a feeling U2 will make it mind.

      Yeah, I think it's important to differentiate between a stage that's just a platform for the artist to walk on (which can be assembled fairly quickly and without too much difficulty), and the custom staging that you get in big productions where there's a whole world underneath.   Using the Eras tour as an example the stage extending out into the stadium field has all sorts - lifts that go up or down - down most importantly as this allows performers to enter or to leave the stage as needed. There's passageways to get from one part of the stage to another. There's what are effectively dressing rooms set aside for costume changes. There's spare instruments (and techs to look after them) so if something goes wrong above they can be swapped out in the space of seconds. There's even a track and dolly system running the full length of the stage so that Taylor can be moved from one end to the other faster than she'd be able to walk.   I don't know the specifics of the Madonna tour to the same degree but my understanding is that a lot of the same techniques are used.

      Can't speak for Dua Lipa's, but Coldplay's was vastly scaled down compared to their stadium production staging though, and tracks were adapted to reflect that. MOTS tour had a full walkway 30m out to the B-Stage in the middle of the crowd, and two C-Stages. Glastonbury didn't accommodate that at all and just had a very small walkway in front of the Pyramid stage, and (IIRC) a disconnected B-Stage.   Which re-enforces my point. Acts can adapt their stage shows if they really want. Most do, some don't want to. Glastonbury might miss out on the odd act that doesn't want to slightly adapt, but so will most festivals.
