2027 Headliners

Be nearly a year gap in live shows (I think)  by the time Fountains play Leeds/Reading  recon there is a fair chance that this will be in support of a new album.

They've played constantly and absolutely everything else,what else can they do bar Reading?, either way they are getting them after everywhere else, dame for Charli, same for Chase and any new songs will be like two plus everything already from tour. You surely want fresh bands that have been around everywhere but the kebab shop.

They played a pretty big (sub?) slot at R&L 2024, to be fair.

 

My guess is a new song will drop before it, maybe two - AM Do I Wanna Know before Glastonbury 2013 vibes, then the album drops a number of months later.

 

It's still all sooner than I expected, if it is indeed heading towards a new record.

They'll want to strike while the iron's hot I guess. They clearly feel like they can headline Glasto if they turned down the sub slot in 2025.

I think in this community where a lot of us do a lot of gigging and festivaling quite a lot while perusing every line up as they come out. Yes this might seem like bands who have been around a lot. But-   

 

For a lot of people Leeds & Reading is a coming of age right of passage -  a lot of the attendees will be young and it will be there first festival. -  they will care not if the acts that are playing have been around a lot recently -  It wont be on their radar one bit.

They were 4th down at Reading in 2024, Lana, Fred and Raye were above. So yes, 2024 with fairly decent tour of their own plus Reading, 2025 plenty of outdoor shows, 2026 back at Reading. I'd be very surprised if they were picked on a 4th yesr straight touring by Glastonbury in 2027.

Tbf when my friends went to Reading and Leeds in the late 2000s/early 2010s when we were in our teens/early 20s, that was a part of it and there'll be people still going according to that. So yeah, it's still a part of the festival tradition and I'm aware what teens like now won't be the same as what I was listening to in 2008-13 (and still am)

I've seen they've been confirmed to headline Electric Picnic in Ireland the week after Reading and Leeds so they're clearly gearing up for something.

 

Do we think they'd accept a sub spot for '27 or are they really now in a headliner or nothing mindset?

 

Tbf Fontaines did play a sub for Biffy Clyro for TRNSMT

They will be now but they'll have to wait until 28 at least

 

I think it's Florence/Chappell if not both, Foos and one more. If they can't get Oasis then I see Fender.

They've accepted less at R+L though, and Glastonbury is another level up from R+L.

 

Yes, I know R+L do the "we have 2 headliners a day" pretence in order to massage egos, but if it was really a deal breaker Glastonbury can do some mitigation as well as they've done with Pulp, Foo Fighters, and (kind of) Lizzo in recent years.

Accepted less? They're a headliner, aren't they? Certainly the way it was portrayed on their socials, I haven't delved much further than that.

 

I know for a fact that the turning down the sub-slot last year was 100% correct. To do that, only to accept a sub-slot two or three years down the line would be, well... idiotic.

 

I'm biased, quite a lot, and it's subjective, but for me they're at the peak of their powers now. They know their value right now. Naturally they need to keep delivering with the records.

They're being billed as a "second headliner", ie they're playing before Charli XCX.

 

Which is basically a way of taking a sub slot, and making it sound more important.

I haven't looked into it but I think headliner is a bit too high at Reading, with two its fine but given they got that, next time at Glastonbury it will be headline.

Last time I went Leeds (14 years, Christ I'm getting old) Pulp & The Strokes essentially co-headlined.

 

Is that what this is, then? A regular R&L occurrence?

For my taste, it's a bit different.

 

The Pulp/Strokes thing was more of a genuine coheadline thing with The Strokes going on last at Reading and Pulp closing the show at Leeds, and both getting full length sets at both shows.

 

Whereas the way they do it now tends to be a defined main headliner playing last at both sites, and a "second headliner" before them. In this case Charli XCX is the main headliner for the day. So it's likely FDC will start at about 8pm or so, maybe earlier depending on how long they and Charli each get.

 

It's basically a way to allow R&L to market that they deliver more, while at the same time allowing the acts the kudos of claiming headliner status. But by any definition there is a clear hierarchy of the acts.

Not even essentially, they were down as co-headliners.

 

If twice bands are given the same amount of time, especially if its 1.5 which then they are both full headlining. The Florence and Chase one will be interesting as she will definitely get 1.5 hours, it's whether they get 1hr 15 or not but I think both will get the same.

Surprised Glastonbury haven't started doing this with Other Stage headliners.

That will be if Chems play live again. I reached out a while back to someone who would know about them live and he said their production costs too much to play live.

I still think Fred will headline the Pyramid, personally. Dunno whether '27 or '28 would fit the bill, with what he's upto.

 

It feels like there's so many in the running. The beauty of a fallow year I guess.
