I had a vague hierarchy of British first-time headliners from the last decade-and-a-half or so before 2024 and must admit that The 1975 were not the next one I expected.

Raye likely vaults into the conversation before then, and perhaps Little Simz too. 

BMTH stand out here as being nowhere near imo.

I just can't see Little Simz getting any bigger at this point to be honest, and I think she would draw a SZA-sized headline crowd currently.

She also wasn't really big enough to sub, she's one of those who is pushed by the festival. See also Raye this year.

I honestly didn't expect the sales - and scope - of these summer shows from Fontaines D.C. to be quite so large. Likely speaks to how Romance has helped cement them as a crossover band, especially in festival season too.

 

BMTH are such a weird one. Have ceased to release albums conventionally in a simultaneous physical/digital format, despite belonging to a genre that typically requires strong numbers from the former. But they sold out their arena tour in a matter of hours last year, and have got top spot outright at R+L this year - typically an indicator they are in the ballpark.

 

The fact they are a metal band - even with their heavily increased pop leanings - may remain the major stumbling block. Metallica has certainly felt more like the exception to the rule with every passing year, even as you do get harder acts popping up here and there.

Jury is out on that, I guess. Concur that I didn't think of Little Simz as sub material, but a massive crowd - helped by Coldplay campers, in some part of course - and a very strong performance proved me wrong. Would like to see Raye do the same, and do think a desire to promote female headliners through the ranks could stand her in good stead.

 

The same does go for Charli XCX, but I just wonder if a barrier has been reached there already. The LIDO sales are my stumbling block when assessing size for her.

Absolutely wasn't big enough and was pushed being a female option. Raye is bigger now that Simz was then and had a little more clout behind her to have got it IMO. Simz crowd also heavily looked bigger by being Coldplays sub. You're rarely getting the chance to sub a band of that size with the rare amount of festival shows they do. If she was sub on Friday or Sunday you see the difference.

Have to remember that Fontaines didn't over orice their shows either. They were very much in a price bracket of we actually want to sell these.

Pricing was strong, and that always helps. A lot more people going to take punts on an arena show less than forty quid than over it.

Watching the Coachella livestreams and Fender has been absolutely nailing it so far, absolutely deserves the headline slot next time round! Quite a few other bands I’ve watched I’d love to see at the farm after the fallow - Julie, The Marias, underscores, Speed, TOPS, Thee Sacred Souls and even Jimmy Eat World I think would go down a treat! Oh and Gaga absolutely needs to headline next time she’s round!

I don't think anyone disputes that Fender would headline. He might be shite but he'll headline.

 

Jimmy would be great, it's been a while and with the increased rock this year they are on the right path but I don't see them touring still when Glastonbury returns. They've toured from February last year so that would be 3 and a half years which is unlikely.

 

Gaga will have to wait until next time but she'll get snapped up by sone euro festivals next year. I'm convinced that the Glastonbury fallow is to allow for Oasis to play.

 

Also, Benson Boone showing how you do a cover song. I've seen Olivia cover No Doubt recently and that's how not to unfortunately.

Wouldn't be the first time they've messed up lol. You'd think he's surely a shoe in. I still think him and Oasis will both do it with a female option. Sabrina is my guess but Chappell can't be written off

I don't know of this, I know of Sam being open to taking a lower than headline slot but they would rather keep him back for the headline slot.

Yes but they had their 3 didn't they. It was something said a while ago so who knows. 

 

Considering Fred was replaced by The 1975, Olivia was got an Neil was in. If he was actually in thoughts for this year properly then why have The 1975 with no new music step in?

Fender was defo in the conversations. Seems like he said no and wanted to focus on his stadium shows.
