Just got my first email from the new PM (in addition to one or two pre-PM last week)... They're definitely focusing on getting ex-membres back in the tent. It's a smart message, appealing to progressives... back me on rough sleeping, add your name to the pledge... then they have an idea of how many they might be able to re-engage with.

A few minutes ago, the result was announced. As I take up the role of Leader of the Labour Party, I want to be absolutely clear with you about my intentions. It'll be Mahmood which the markets will accept and supported by a heavy duty investment banker to also reassure the markets.

"The markets won't accept Miliband" should be treated as absolute nonsense though. This is entirely right-wing blackmail. Miliband spent years working in the treasury, and however left-wing he is, he genuinely believes in balancing the budget and doing things sensibly. There may be a slight whine but we wouldn't get any Truss/Kwarteng type nonsense that actually crashes the country.

 

Letting "the markets" stop the most qualified person from becoming chancellor is genuinely horrendous.

tbh not sure its just the markets if he doesn't pick Miliband, it will be more about authority and who's government this actually is.

but with also re. the bond markets...because of the level now it doesn't need for them to go up by much and we're literally having to spend billions more on the debt rather than nice things like young people and homeless people etc...so if that means Mahmood rather than Miliband who cares.

but also again, these gilt markets move around all the time, so any little movements now don't really matter

Greece and Italy broke during the financial crisis at around 7% on the ten year. I think the UK the only other country with a double digit deficit hit 5.4%. We've just moved back over 5%. Reeves top was 5.2%. I think Truss's was under 4% but it was the speed of the move that spooked the markets.

yep...if Burnham fails with this we could be seeing a whole load of nasty austerity and god knows what comes from that by I assume would be a more right wing party, but surely that would have to be Tories rather than some populists because someone like Reform cutting welfare and pensions is going to hit a lot of their voters hard.

But, it isn't just what our government does, it is global stuff that drives things like inflation and so interest rates that spooks the markets, and to be honest that is not looking good at all.

The move today seems to be based on his statement of stick to the fiscal rules but looking for flexibility within the rules.

 

Guess we will find out what that means soon i.e. getting rid of Reeves buffer or trying to fiddle borrowing as "off the book"
