He thinks he’s won … he’s not looked at detail like always … from what I can see Burham has quite a few policys that might help with popularity …. Digital id clearly not popular on either side along with palantir nhs contract being dropped .

So, poor old Keir's last night as PM. Think the level of vitriol thrown at him from all sides is ridiculous, a fascist from the left, a communist from the right,  but ultimately he f**ked it. He did do some good stuff, renters rights, workers rights, nationalising railways, changed fiscal rules to borrow more for investment, increased taxes progressively to help with day to day spending, sort of stuff if Corbyn had done would be getting shouted from the rooftops. But too much sh*t in there too. They f**ked it with winter fuel payment cuts and welfare reforms, both not necessarily bad things imo but just done really badly so looked like punishment to make the numbers add up. Then there was all the other stuff, the island of strangers speech and then the whole lame excuse if he'd known he wouldn't have read it. The stupid proscription of Palestine Action and the sight of old ladies getting arrested for terrorism for holding up a banner.The anti migrants policies especially the change to various rights to remain for people already here, and the anti trans stuff which took what EHRC were saying and went with it and beyond without any thought it seemed to the minority who's rights were being extinguished.  And just the crappy undecisive, scared shitless of the press, not bothered with actually doing any of the politics side of governing, taking the PLP for granted,  made him a totally inadequate PM. Maybe history won't treat him too badly though, he was just one of a string of PMs unable to govern a country that is maybe becoming too ungovernable.

My expectation of Burnham is to be very similar to Starmer but spout a bunch of nonsense about Manchester and being better at taking easy wins. Probably slightly less awful on human rights but not by much.

My expectation that he will try and do some radical stuff, but the realities of the country's finances and a whole load of geopolitics will engulf  everything like it did with Starmer.

I’m starting positive what I’ve seen so far is decent . If he talks Manchester it’s fine with me everyone is entitled to sell what they see is positive contribution , this world is hard and toxic especially if you can’t speak about what you feel is good

I don't actually object too much to the Manchester stuff except when it starts to look like he'll neglect other Northern cities + Bristol. I think it's a very open question of "will he prioritise Manchester or will he actually spread services and funding around the country away from London?" I can see both happening. 

 

In terms of infrastructure/investment, Newcastle and Sheffield could use some civil service branches, while Bristol and Leeds rank amongst the cities with the worst public transport infrastructure per capita in Western Europe. If Burnham addresses that in a "Manchester is great, we should push to help other cities get what Manchester's got" that would be excellent. I don't really have high hopes for it, but I will give him the chance.

 

I suspect he'll continue doing 80% of Starmer's nasty rhetoric about migrants and Labour's attacks on trans people though.
