I don't know if Ireland has been deliberately excluded here as it also has a very high electricity price at the mo. Because its energy supply is based chiefly on oil and gas. Italy too gets most of its power from oil and gas.

This + the fact that there is in excess of 100% difference in prices within the EU supports the fact that it is very much the extent to which a country derives its energy supply from oil and gas, and not whether or not it has membership in the EU, which determines the price of electricity within that country.

True for many but some smaller nations manage mainly on renewables. The UK being an island on the edge of the atlantic should be able to achieve the scale to follow suit.

This explains why UK hit more than other parts of europe, more reliant on natural gas basically, and leaving IEM hasn't helped, but also a few other issues have helped to exacerbate the problem.

Well price stability would be achieved with more diversity generally. All power is subject to potential supply side issues. Nuclear is the most steady but even that has risks: Uranium isn’t mined in the UK, maybe not even europe? So you’re at the whim of geopolitics, plus its so centralised that if your one or two plants go down because of some issue or other, you’re fucked whilst if its flat calm around the windfarms of the dogger bank, it might be blowing a gale in the irish sea.

In addition, the long run trend of renewable power is always going to be downwards, and towards more stability, as technologies improve - the same can’t be said for energy that depends on a finite resource.
