Being originally from Derby, I must admit, Nottingham has it when it comes to places with atmosphere. Saw Black Keys at rescue rooms in about 2003 just after they'd released thickfreakness, was incredible. And a Deftones gig at rock city (might have been 2005) was a highlight, not least because they played Korea and Passenger from White Pony. Lots of good memories.

Safe to say that crowds in the British Isles (and Europe in general, probably) are much of a muchness compared to the craziness that goes down whenever a big rock band plays Buenos Aires.

I've been to a couple of gigs in Sweden and there was a noticeable difference in the crowds there. But aye, as a general rule differences in crowds between Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, London etc tend to be over-stated. I think if you have a negative experience at a gig somewhere that isn't home there's a tendency to attribute it to the 'local crowd' as opposed to just being a generic couple of arseholes you'll find over the length and breadth of the county.

I think I was at that same Deftones show! Saw them a few years later as well (2009?) and they were ace again. 

I grew up in Matlock, so it was always a bit of mission to get Rock City during the teen years but it was always absolutely worth it.

i find the average scot to be more friendly and approachable but thats just me

bands frequently cite Glasgow Barrowlands and their favourite venue though.

Ahh, Matlock, Was there with my folks munching on fish n chips just last year after some fireworks thing at chatsworth. Think we went to a place run by a bloke called Charlie, good food. I've seen deftones a couple of times and they didn't disappoint on either. I think they'd be an absolute treat on the other stage, don't think they'd do it unless they headline though.

Aye, well there's a difference between the crowd and the venue.  The Barras is a great place to see a show, but it can still be packed with wallies.

I think they could sub headline the Other stage if there was a bigger alternative/metal band on above them. Something like Deftones>TOOL or Deftones>SOAD could be possible. 

I kinda think though that since they aren't there this year, they probably never will be

A bit of both, exacerbated by the scarcity factor of the bigger international groups touring that part of the world.

It also tends to be the younger, more testosterone-fuelled males who go, which can contribute to a bit of an edge - though I'm sure gigs by One Direction and the like can also get pretty lairy.

I *rarely* hear it, but then it's unlikely at the types of gigs I tend to surface for.

The few times it's cropped up recently - Blur, Tame Impala - it's definitely made me pine for the halcyon days before it became a thing.

It happened last year at Belle and Sebastian, BELLE AND SEBASTIAN for christ sakes. I suppose that's the risk you run by booking the Hydro.

I'm not sure, we were up in the seating and could here it coming from the pit, so it was unclear as it to where it was coming from. I do think it's done increasingly satirically by the younger studenty crew but the problem with that is that it sounds the exact same as someone doing it genuinely.

Does it make for a better gig, tho? Nope. If a band ain't doing it, I just think it's weird to act as tho they're the best thing ever.

I didn't even realise there was a live album, will need to get a copy. Thoroughly enjoyed that gig, even though I was too high up to get a t-shirt.

I've never noticed northern crowds as being more lively for the kind of acts where that'd be a positive thing.

However as someone who watches a lot of quieter, acoustic type acts what I have most definitely noticed and stand by is that London crowds are far, far more likely to talk through the entire set. When a tour didn't have a local show, I always used to go to the London one and made a day of it, however the talking through songs got to be such a problem that these days I'll do almost anything to avoid the London shows, even if it means travelling much further.
