This is the kind of nonsense that shuts an event down. Looked really scary. Probably been people sneaking in for a while, word gets out, then you see scenes like this. They will definitely try it on again next year. Then no more Wireless. Not really my thing, but still sad. Spoiling people's fun. Well done.

I read about this and never followed it up. Shocking behaviour and shocking comments people are making too! It's a shame, Wireless isn't really for me but there are plenty of others who enjoy the festival. Be a shame if this ruined it for them.

ive seen many people on here praising fence jumpers/tunnelers etc and fondly telling tales about mates who got in without a ticket etc etc at glastonbury., talking about the old days where many people came over the gate with the rose tinted language showing........but.how is this any different? you cant apply different judgements when its the same situation as a result surly? your either for it or against it....yes wireless is shite...but its no worse then whats gone on at glastonbury, particualy in the early days if the stories are to be believed.

Perhaps my reading comprehension is not good though. Could you link to the specific posts that show "many people" praising fence jumpers/tunnelers then? I mean, it wont take you long to find if there are "many", right?

I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that there are longtime posters who have sometimes expressed fondness for pre-superfence years like 1995 and 2000 when large numbers of people charged and broke through the fence.

In 1998, as a fresh faced 13 year old I remember being stood near to the fence and it coming down - I can't recall where on site it was due to how many years ago it was and the change in site layout etc, but the fence was rocked (in a similar fashion to at Wireless) for a bit, security were there but just kind of stood back, when the fence came down (roughly 3 or 4 panels) literally hundreds poured in and the security tried to nab a few but were making very half arsed attempts. If I remember correctly someone was shot and killed that year as well - those were quite lawless days.

Not that I condone it, but yes this always used to happen at Glastonbury, culminating in the year 2000's events.

I saw this video last week... and was all like.... ohh, that wouldnt happen at glasto.... then I took a step back, and step back a bit and thought... dont be so fucking judgemental... this would, and has in the past.  the only reason it doesnt is that the crowd at glasto had got older... (still very diverse, but older) and the fence is fairly impenetrable now.

 

When I was younger and stupider, yes, we'd come down and jump the fence / blag our way in with a bit of a uv marker scribbled on the back of our hands...  I vaguely remember in the early 90's a big part of the fence coming down, and reportedly 1000's of people getting in pre superfence.  But there were no fucking camp chair walls, no bbc, and people didnt get all precious if you were smoking a bit of puff.  As for the knife thing...  didnt someone one get shot at glasto in the mid '90s?  Kids are stupid.  They eventually grow up (if only a little bit)

yes it happened, but no-one here celebrates it like it was a grand thing. Do you really think people here would celebrate someone tearing down the superfence and rushing into the festival now? The odd ingenious person getting in via an elaborate method is not the same thing.

I remember talking to someone this year who hadn't been to Glastonbury since 98 (the year of the shooting) and had been every year prior to that year. He had avoided the festival since that year. Nice chap but was deeply affected by that year. Hope he had a brilliant festival and returns next year.

 

I think people like aspects of how it was before the super fence, I don't think I have read too many people saying they miss the fence jumpers. Why would they? When things like that put the festival they enjoy under threat. 

I think councils have become a lot stricter when it comes to licenses for outdoor events so the security try and deal with things in a different manner to back in the 90s.
