The Hangover Thread - Hints and Tips

I thought we had one of these but when I've searched the forum, I couldn't find it anywhere.

What do you do to manage the consequences of the excess you put your body through?

I've bought milk thistle again this year having had quite a success with it over the past few festivals and at christmas time. I'll start taking it this week to allow it time to build up the effects.

I've also bought some 5-HTP for the first time. Heard mixed results from this but I'm willing to give it a bash to try and offset that 'I hate myself and want to stay in bed for the rest of my life' feeling from the Monday onwards. Anyone tried this before can offer some opinion?

I've heard about electrolyte drinks. Can someone post any suggestions for the best types to buy.

Nothing kills a hangover like getting right back on it. There's not a hangover on the planet that'll withstand 6 pints of scrumpy and a couple of strong mojitos.

Of course, but mitigating hangover can't do any harm.

I've never been a fan of greasy food as a cure, it eventually comes back and bites you on the behind.

I've posted this before but my number one tip get dressed, get up and get moving. If you lay in your tent thinking about how bad your feeling your going to start feeling worse. Get up, go for a walk, go get water, walk to toilet, whatever it is.

Then just start eating and drinking, I've got high vitamin protein shakes for breakfast this year to start putting good stuff back in as soon as I wake up.

If it's a comedown your battling as well as your hangover I also recommend prescription sleeping pills if you can get them. You feel like you've been asleep about 20 minutes and they really take the edge off.

Once your out and about I'd also recommend a Bloody Mary from one of the cocktail bars.

hangover is a state of mind - just get up and get on with it. Drink and eat something, then start on the beers or whatever.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day / night will help keep you hydrated

When do you take said Vallies? I've seen the state of people who take them while drinking, its very noticeable.

That said, post festival may take the edge off the self-loathing.

Half a fiver the next morning to ward off the self loathing and heebie jeebies. Not while drinking. Just turn ye to wibbly jelly doing that.

Badlands - I'm a 5 HTP advocate. I love a beer, but am an anxiety sufferer and get the horrors the next day pretty badly :-)

After getting on it, I do one or two caps before bed - I get the hot milk thick head feeling and blurred vision and sleep really soundly. In the morning, it really has taken the edge off...it might be a placebo thing but even if that's the case, it works for me...

I get it in the blue placcy bottle from Holland and Barrett...only side effects for me are fucking nutty vivid dreams..not bad, just crazy :-) Hope they work for you.

Been searching for something to ward off the hangover for years. Recently started taking the following, and it has seemed to work (although maybe not put my body through quite the strain it will go through at Glasto!!). Before drinking, one NAC, (N Acetyl Cysteine), and one Terra Nova Dandelion, Artichoke and Cysteine Complex) then after drinking/before bed, the same again, plus one Hawaiian Astaxanthin, 12 mg. All are available via Amazon. The Terra Nova one is somewhat expensive, around £23 for 50 tablets. I bought it as an end of line in our local health food shop for a fiver, I imagine that when I run out of those, I may try it with just a standard milk thistle or the like. I must admit I am a bit of a sucker for trying different things like this, but don't usually end up buying a second lot, but with these I will, so that must say something. Also, the supplements have other benefits, such as the Astaxanthin reportedly being good to protect against sunburn. Also found Alka Seltzer XS good if you do end up with a headache with you wake, although you have to disperse it into water, and it does taste quite foul. Anyway, each person has what works for them, so good luck, whatever you try!

Cheers - some interesting suggestions, though I'm not sure I'd commit to £23 for the tablets.

I've just ordered some electrolyte powder off ebay, seems cheaper than the tablets.

Thanks for posting this, I'm hoping it's useful for the post festival heebie jeebies.

I suppose I thought they were on about glastonbury survival with hangovers.

If you can get away with it a work though, get drinking.

Slightly off topic, but a friend of mines boss has 7 pints a day at work. One around 11am, three on his dinner, one 4pm then 2 before going home.

I'm resisting saying "not drinking so much" ;) I'm a massive lightweight so usually if I'm hungover I like to fester in my bed, but you really just have to get out there and carry on! A sugary cup of tea, something salty later, try to eat, drink and get some of that Resolve stuff :)

As many hangover symptoms are basically just dehydration, Dioralyte or own brand rehydration salts are a must. Some people prefer sports electrolyte pills, which are a lot cheaper, but personally I find they don't work as well for me.

And at Glasto, you can of course get straight back on it!

    • I think my party got pretty lucky last night, at least compared to some of the horror stories over on Reddit. I was very impressed with Father John Misty in particular.   Perhaps my view would be different if I were a big Massive Attack fan or whatever, but right now my feeling is that if it's not safe for the shows to go ahead... then it's not safe for the shows to go ahead. I'd much rather they were cautious than roll the dice when it comes to something like that.    Here's hoping everyone has a better day today.
    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
