Campbed v Self Inflating Mat v Airbed

The Other Steve

Recommended Posts

Last year I bought an Exped Downmat, which was good, but I'm not sure it was so comfortable it justified the expense. Unfortunately, due to an incident, I had to throw it away at the end of the festival, and still haven't replaced it. I'm not inclined to get another, but something sufficiently long (I'm 6'2) and wide (to accommodate my sleeping pod/bag) is needed.

What "incident" was this then? :P

Gotta say for balance I hate self-inflators. Never been happy with one I've tried always too thin to not feel ground when moving around and not slept well on them. I was airbed all the way before

Have done all 3. Camp bed for me (mine is an ancient Millets one which has done loads of festivals and camping trips). Easy to carry - just fasten to rucksack - and assemble. Lifts you off the ground, feels more like a proper bed and you can also store clothes underneath it.

Airbeds are heavy, never pack back into the box they came in and have a tendency to explode in a hot tent. Or deflate in a cold one.

Too much of a "Princess and the Pea" type for roll mats.

what's people opinions of this one? I cant seem to find a depth measurement for it. I only ask as its 20% off this weekend and I am planning on buying a waterproof jacket from mountain warehouse anyway. As previously mentioned I have no clue about these mats.

I've used a few different brands of self-inflating mats, and although they may differ in terms of build-quality and how small they pack, the sleep quality was always the same - i.e. not good. I got dead arms and they were too narrow and slippery. I now use a full sized double airbed and duvet, as I can park my car quite close to our workers campsite, but when space/weight are an issue, e.g. going somewhere on my bike, I'd use a Thermarest NeoAir. Much more comfortable than a self-inflator, and packs down far smaller and lighter than any other mat.

I think I'm just going to brave it with a cheapo airbed this time around. After some massive faff with my old work, sacking me for being in hospital and now not actually paying me despite saying they will, I have to go back to doing the camping cheap so I can eat the nice food around the site!! Real life is a depressing state of having enough money to do things. Hoping I don't get a rubbish one that deflates during the night!

I've got this badboy:

5cm deep. Plenty comfortable.

Top tip: open the valve when you leave the tent in the morning. As it's going to be a scorcher (note positivity) the tent will heat up like an oven making the air inside the bed expand.

If you don't open the valve there's nowhere for the air to go and a risk it will spring a leak or burst.

Definitely a self inflating mat for me as ravelling by bus so air beds etc are more annoying to carry, I've had a quecha half body one that just supports your back last 2 years and it's done the job but it's gone all mouldy in the garage over winter so just ordered this, haven't tried it out yet but it looks good http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0018PX6PW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

That's the one I'm currently looking at, unless anyone has any better suggestions for between £20-£25?
