I've seen it work at other places like Green Day at Reading Festival, you have a headliner level band open a stage such as the newly moved John Peel, secret set could possibly work in that format, we've changed this so we are celebrating with this band....cue some massive surprise and crazy crowd madness until it's done.

The key with that is that they had it early enough in the morning that quite a few people (me included) couldn't be arsed to get up in time go and watch it!

(Luckily for us, we were camped close enough that I was able to listen to it from my tent whilst getting ready to head out.)

I was under the impression the set was starting at 12 instead of 11 when they came on, I climbed out of my tent, could hear them starting up and i was like this sounds too live to be a cd and just sprinted across, like many others, i made it inside the tent but it looked pretty busy behind me, it was fun, nice way to start the day, then went across to see Blood Red Shoes on the Reading main stage right after which was perfect for me, got a spot on the barrier in the sunshine and parked up for a good few hours.

seems very unlikely at this point, but not impossible, sure the Who weren't lined up until May last year.

Some combination of Muse, Radiohead and Adele to join Coldplay as it stands.

Out of interest - this time last year who were you guys pipping for headliners? Was there the equivalent to this years Muse/Adele were everyone was sure they would be announced?

last year was a bit weird because the who were actually scheduled to play a gig, which they subsequently cancelled in order to play glastonbury. It was unprecedented.

This time last year, there was nowhere near as much certainty. Especially over the final (Sunday) headliner.

Nailed on but nobody has a shred of evidence other than 'my mate'.

That's not a bet I'd take as it's extremely unlikely as we all know. However they are not ruled out 100% by either other commitments or by a statement by either the band or the festival or a third party.

The Who were out of the running this time last year by everyone, and they had a prior commitment!

An easy way would be to say there was far less seemingly-solid info last year than this year.

This year - from where I'm sat, anyway - it seems pretty clear that in the early autumn Glasto were working on the basis that their headliners would be Muse, Adele & Coldplay.

Things might have changed since that time, but there's nothing to really suggest they have, and quite a lot that suggests that's what's happening.

There is absolutely no chance. Like last year. And the year before, etc.

If they drop a new album then maybe the following year. No album, no appearance. And certainly not headlining 20 odd years since they last released any music.

Last year the Foos were set in stone.

The other two spots were still very much being discussed from what i remember. There was a lot of rumours about the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Blur and Prince if memory serves, NME always pushing for that Oasis reunion.

I remember thinking around the Brits that Kanye is surely headlining this year and he was announced about a week or two later much to my joy at the time.

Sunday was always a bit up in the air, how close was Prince to actually doing it, clearly someone was in the picture until fairly late on as the Who cancelled existing gigs or moved them about just to be able to headline Glastonbury again.

No they weren't. They weren't on anyone' radar as they'd already headlined. Neil got the info in March that they were playing but then the Paris gig seemed to discount that.

There is no info that the Roses are playing. They're not in or out of the running. There's no running at all.

But if you take that angle on things, you might as well be saying "Coldplay might not be headlining" - because it's always possible they might have to pull out for some unforseen reason - and that would be taking things to a ridiculous level.

The Who weren't rumoured at this time last year because they weren't in the running to headline.

Last year Foo Fighters were the only ones people had any real certainty over. And many thought that it was Florence's year to be a headliner. She did, eventually, but only because the Foos dropped out.

Kanye West came out of nowhere, then there was months of speculation over the final headliner, and so much analysis of touring patterns/who was available that night.

eFestivals had Coldplay down as nailed on, but that never happened. There was also rumours that came out of the mouth of Michael Eavis of a Chris Martin supergroup.

We had Team Swift in one corner.

Team Roses in another, backed by the bullshit rumours of roses4baggie/whispering Bob Harris.

Some people were hoping for Blur.

Others for Fleetwood Mac, although they were an IOW exclusive.

And of course, many were hoping for Prince.

In the end we got The Who, who had a gig that night.

This year it seems much more nailed on, but who knows how it'll all pan out!

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you on this, can't see it happening at all in 2016 at least.

Oh yes Coldplay, especially Chris Martin and his Superfriends, wonder what that would have been all about if it had happened.

Seems more organised this year with Beyonce being in the uk around the same time, guest appearance perhaps.

Team Swift, yes forgot about that one too. Never thought she would really headline though, now it's the only spot she would play I guess.
