Is it not a collaborator or friend that's up there with Tom? I think that was announced when Ed said he wasn't playing live with them anymore.

ah i wasn't sure if that had been confirmed or not, but yeah i believe it's the guy who's done all their visuals for them in the past. definitely doesn't seem to have affected their live show, anyway!

Guy that has done the visuals in the past isn't it?

I was under the impression that he still was doing the visuals, just now has a place on stage.

If the live show is affected at all, I'd expect it to sound more like the CD than usual, particularly on the way the sound is processed rather than the sequencing. Obviously, that clip is too short to tell really.

got so swept up in seeing all those hits that i completely missed that they didn't play Block Rockin' Beats. hope that returns - they've probably played it at every show since it was released but i'd just love to see it live. also disappointed to not see Horsepower (in to Swoon) there but ah well, can't win 'em all)

Yeah you're right on the sound front, I can only assume that the 'helper' (can't remember his name) will have also been getting a crash course in some of the live set up too, would imagine the kit on stage is all on a midi-clock anyway and they just have to trigger the samples on a DAW. I'm sure I read somewhere (link within this thread perhaps) that one of them tended to do more of the real time effects work, so maybe this role has fallen to the new guy.

I'd assumed that doing the visuals was already a full time job and that Tom would have to handle the whole thing himself, with more sequencing, but perhaps you're right and the the visuals guy is doing music now. This is all I could find:

"I know Tom and Adam are working on a brand new look for the show," he said. "It will be the same big production, with Adam’s amazing visuals and the studio set up on stage but I won’t be part of it."

As to who did what, it is the missing brother (Ed) who did most of the tweaking. A good excuse to link this excellent article again:

"Tom tends to do the lion's share of the mixing,” Matt explains, "and then Ed does the lion's share of the twiddling with envelopes and filter sweeps, mapping stuff to mod wheels and just messing about with it. There's always one of them who's darting around grabbing hold of things, but Ed does a lot of the hands-on stuff with the synths, while Tom's more kind of nailed to the desk, just keeping a lid on it.

Ive seen the Chems a fair few times over the years at Glasto, same with Orbital.. And while their shows are always superb, they're a "bit seen one, seen them all". I'm looking forward a lot more to Deadmau5 (but pissed that it clashes with George Clinton) than the Chems this year, as it will be something new on the "Big Electronica" headliner act for the other stage.

anyone else?

Ah yes, that Sound on Sound article is the one I was referring to, I guess a lot of the visuals would have been preprogrammed anyway wouldn't they? So if he sets up the cues etc then someone doing the additional work on the night probably wouldn't be too big a stretch? Unsure how labour intensive the visuals would be - although I don't think their sets change much throughout the touring cycle so would assume it's pretty much all sorted prior to the show.

Deadmau5 has never really clicked with me, but i haven't listened to him in years. any reccomendations for what he's like recently?

I don't think that setlist above is a accurate going off the youtube videos from last night. Few songs not on that list, The Private Psychedelic Reel immediately jumps out

ah it looks to have been updated massively since i posted that! good news - plenty more fantastic songs in there! Escape Velocity, Don't Think, Block Rockin' Beats and Music: Response are songs i'm VERY glad to see. guessing they played for around an hour and a half at this festival so if we get this setlist then happy happy days!

edit: actually they must've played for much longer as that's a hell of a lot of songs, so we'll unfortunately probably get far less... still a cracker though

They tend to fit a lot of stuff into a relatively short period of time so I think that setlist is entirely feasible for the Other Stage headline slot - about the same number of tracks as they performed last time they played.

hope you're right, because apart from maybe the addition of Horsepower i can't really think of much they could do to improve that setlist. the Other field will be going nuts

Just had a look at the setlist from 2011 and they actually played more tracks than are showing for yesterdays set so I reckon we could all be in for a cracking evenings entertainment.

Horsepower has to be one of my least favourite Chems songs, i'm glad it's gone!

(never liked Block Rockin' Beats much either)

    • Geese playing for 1:20 instead of just an hour was a lovely surprise. The energy was great!
