Tom Waits Map

After all the Tom Waits chat in amongst the madness of the Headliners thread I thought some people would be interested in poke around on http://tomwaitsmap.com/ a map of every location mentioned in his songs with details of the relevant lyrics.

Not strictly Glasto-related sorry.

If he ever where to play and I know he wouldn't where would be best for him. I don't think he'd go down that well on the Pyramid, West Holts Headliner?

He would have to play after dark, so the legend spot is out, and if he did play, he would draw a surprisingly large crowd (to those who don't know his stuff). Truth is, he is an absolute legend and I think If he played a lot of people would realise how important it was. So, west holts headliner, without question.

Tom Waits and Goan Fish Curry. Sweet.

Why is that? Wouldn't they want him to draw a big crowd to prove it would be a success?

or are you saying that he'd pull in too many people and cause safety issues if the Pyramid headliner wasn't massive?

Yeah, I'm saying that up against particularly weak headliners elsewhere he'd pull an enormous crowd for a West Holts headliner.

Too big for West Holts surely? Could he headline Other?

I'd love this. Would see him over P*****, Bowie or literally any other act in the world. But his website still says he has no intention of touring in the foreseeable future.

Yeah, he's the one act left in the world I would love to see but I don't see him ever doing Glastonbury. The fact he very rarely tours and when he does he plays theatres rather than gig venues would suggest that Glastonbury is not going to be on his (or Kathleen's) radar.

Having said that, he did do that Neil Young benefit thingy last year so you never know. I'd love him to headline Acoustic but I fear it'd be another Portishead in 95 affair. Or are we all myopic when it comes to the popularity of the great man?

After a week of listening to closing time, the heart of Saturday night and heart attack and vine, on my cycle journey to work and back, from recommendations here, I can say that the heart of Saturday night will be something I'll go back to again and again. It's bloody brilliant, as I'm sure you all knew this

Mule Variation is probably my favourite album of his. TW is an amazing artist - I could listen to his stuff all day. But i don't know where he would fit as far as Glasto goes. He probably wouldn't go down well as a Pyramid headliner, but anything less wouldn't be good enough for him.

Small Change is the only one on vinyl I have. It's great. Obviously. But I'd go for Blue Valentine then Swordfishtrombones. Was it the latter when Tom got together with Kathleen? I saw Tom in Edinburgh with my first wife, who liked Blood Money. When Margaret passed away, I quoted Black Market Baby at the funeral, it was fitting. Sorry to get all maudlin on you.

(as previewed by Nal a few posts up) Tom Waits on Letterman. I can't believe Letterman didn't ask him if he'd ever play West Holts one year...

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/videos/watch-tom-waits-perform-letterman-ode-take-one-last-look-20150515

new song I hear, can't wait to catch his next tour, no doubt Northern working men's clubs.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
