Are they playing? Is Hillage with them?

I haven't heard much Gong and what I did was about three decades ago, but I'm a bit of a Steve Hillage fan.

He doesn't get the credit he deserves for either his guitar playing or his pioneering electronic effects sonic wizardry.

They played on the Sunday but can you recall Ginger Baker being knocked out on stage on the Friday ? - he recovered enough to play on the Sunday - he was will pissed off.
£8 entry ticket - now that is what you call bloody good value and no standing about with five laptops to get a ticket.
shot from the early 80's but not from 81 as they could not get the CND symbol to stay on
82 was a muddy year so I reckon its 1983

The old ridge tents certainly bring back some memories. I had one that lasted loads of Glastonbury's. I still remember the guilty feeling I had when it was finally time to let it go and buy a new tent. I have a 4 man double skinned pop up now. Who'd have thought then that such a thing would have been possible? Now I feel old too.

That's nothing - kids today don't know that we had to get up before we went to bed and lick streets clean. Then some kids if they were lucky would be allowed to play football in bare feet on broken glass. Our family couldn't do that because we couldn't afford broken glass.

I do remember that glasto - excellent right hook from Roy Harper. Sunday afternoon - from memory Gordon Giltrap (bless 'im) was on after Gong. Baker was wandering round the site with 2 big dobermans all week end as I recall (he was camped in the pyramid field just down from us) allegedly looking for Harper.

You might be right about 83 - it certainly isnt 82 as we got there dead early from Stonehenge that year after dropping ridiculous amounts of Superman acid and were camped right down the front. Our tents arent there in the picture so cant be that year.

Feel old.

Lovely story . I used to work with a fellow who lived next door to steve and he really is as potty as you might believe.

apparently they tried to shove the CND sign up in 81 - you can just imagine { No Health and Safety in those days } but they could not get the the bloody thing to stay up.

the ground looks to good for 82 but there was a very good reason why I would be taken so many in 1983 as I am good friends with Derek who was the lead singer of Marillion - { all the fans called him Fish but I knew him before he moved to England so he did not have a nickname in Dalkeith { Scotland. }}

They were well chuffed to be there as it was their biggest gig at that time - god knows how we arranged this { no mobiles in those days } but I met him at the side of the tiny backstage area just before he went on.

They had just arrived as they had stayed the night at Peter Gabriel's house - { he had a studio attached to it } and they had made some recordings the day before.

Marillion played Saturday afternoon 17th of June - set list was Garden Party ,Charting The Single, Script For A Jester´s Tear, Assassing , Chelsea Monday ,He Knows You Know ,Forgotten Sons ,Market Square Heroes.

I met them after the gig and they did not stay as they drove back to Peter Gabriel's house to do some more recordings so unfortunately I don't have any shots of him trying to sleep in a tent being the height he is.

--------

who would have thought Glastonbury would have ended up so big.

When I was a teenager living in the town of Street, during the really hot summer of (I think) 1976, a group of travellers moved onto one of the local beauty spots owned by the National Trust and started a free music festival. I went along with a few of my mates and ended up spending most of the weekend there taking photographs and listening to the music. I'm pretty sure Steve Hilllage played on the Saturday night and that gig and the entire festival opened my eyes and shaped the way I feel about music and festivals today.

I also had my first joint there so remember it with particular affection.

    • Very different in terms of time of game,  yet remember how excited I was before the first game in Euro 2016 having grown up not sure I would ever see wales in an international tournament. That day scraped a win against Slovakia and was just happy to see wales score and win at a tournament, little did I know we would finish in the top 4. Hope Scottish fans get the same experience.
