as for popular opinion, on the subject of metallica as headliner, it's hard to judge - I suspect a majority of glastonbury regulars aren't impressed with the booking but won't be too fussed

That's quite a bit different from your previous statements, where you took it upon yourself to speak for the bulk of the Glastonbury crowd - with nothing to back it up whatsoever other than your own personal preferences.

well i've been loads of times and know loads of people who go, none of whom are particularly happy with it.

i also know the festival pretty well and the kind of music they have there...it's certainly a surprise booking. the fact that it made a good april fool says something surely...

if they get a good crowd and go down a storm I'll be first to admit I was wrong and fair play etc...

Metallica are there on merit weather people are happy or not is secondary .

It just so happens that micheal and Emily want metallica to headline.

It's another flavour to shake up the dynamics of the festival,like micheal eavis said.

i dunno, i've been pretty consistent throughout....of course I don't speak for the crowd, but i do think the majority don't want a metal headliner, which is pretty much what I've been saying.

I think it's impossible to truly gauge what the majority think (regarding most acts at Glasto), and what the people you know think is fairly inconsequential - I know people who've been a fair few times and they're all looking forward to it. It wouldn't necessarily be accurate for me to then claim 'this is going to be a universal success and the entire festival will love it'. It'd be a fairer comment if Metallica weren't the first 'heavy' band to headline and the previous act had been a total flop.

You seem to be saying you share the opinion of the majority of the festival, when in reality theres no way to say what most people want other than trying it and seeing what happens. Same thing happened with dance music iirc and now its an integral part of the festival. Edited May 3, 2014 by Dan R

yep fair enough, it's just an opinion - as I've said before good luck to the people who are excited about it - have a great time, and it will be interesting to see how it goes down.

The festival's constantly changing, so saying that's how its always been doesnt really matter.

You were utterly dismissive of the remote, but feasible possibility of Katy Perry and McBusted. That covers a pretty wide spectrum. So my question is: who would be a good booking in your eyes? Prince and Fleetwood Mac have fallen through. Coldplay and Muse remain a little too recent. Looking around UK festivals this year, I suppose they could have got The Killers, Kings of Leon, Biffy Clyro or at a push Calvin Harris and Justin Timberlake (any others, say, Aerosmith, seem too far fetched to me). I don't think Glastonbury would have picked Metallica in an ideal world, but they're not, so they have. And having the biggest selling act of all time that also regularly headlines festival to call on as something of a reserve option is a nice situation to be in, I should think.

pretty soon i'd imagine. media sources seemed to all be talking about it yesterday, so i reckon in the next week, possibly two weeks or so. the lineup announcement was apparently for 'early May' anyway so it's definitely soon

I remember dance music blasting out in the far parks but not in the festival until certainly 1994 (?) with Orbital's booking. dance music emerged organically at glastonbury...sound systems in car parks and elsewhere, market stalls with tunes/djs, small rigs in the campsites. it was well established by the time they started booking acts on the main stages. I have trouble recalling all the details of early 90s glastonburys but you're right that orbital was a big moment.

it's a fair point - the fleetwood mac / prince situation has left them in the shit, and it's certainly a big name booking to fill the void - i just think it's a bit of a shocker to see them playing. april fool type shocker, you know?
