One benefit of being an oldie is that I've seen the real thing a good few times.

For those not so lucky, Australian Pink Floyd or their spin off Brit Floyd are touring at present. Musically, visually and sound-wise they are about as close as you'll get to a Floyd experience.

I appreciate they are a tribute and some people have mixed feelings about tribute bands but highly recommended.

I'm just confused as to how a friggin' covers band can sell out the Royal Albert Hall.

A covers band.

Granted, they're very very good at what they do, but even so... it confuses me a little. Even the shite covers bands end up playing academy venues.

While the real credit should go to the original bands that evolved and produced the music, some of these bands who cover the material now do it so well that it is almost like seeing the real thing. Also they give people who weren't around the first time a chance to experience older music played live, that they have only discovered recently. Also many of the bands study the original material and live performances to minute detail to try to recreate the sound as authentically as possible. Take the French Canadian early Genesis tribute band The musical Box who cover the Gabriel period of Genesis, they even go as far as using the exact same equipment and lighting that Genesis used in the 70's. They are so good they have received endorsements from Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett and Phil Collins, and in fact Peter Gabriel is quoted on their web site as taking his children to see them "to see what their father did back then" http://themusicalbox.net

Having missed them the last time they were at Glasto i would love them to make a reappearence, and being a big fan of the Gabriel Genesis era i would love to see Musical Box as well. Dosn't look like this year but you never know, with the dirth of headliner on the friday and saturday for me so far this year i'd be there. I believe they were on in the Acoustic tent in 2010 or 11 ?

Last time I saw the Aussie Floyd their back drop was pretty much identical to the one Pink Floyd used at Wembley on the Delicate Sound Of Thunder tour...

...although I probably wasn't at my sharpest either time :)

Edit: But with more kangeroos, obviously

The Australian Pink Floyd are very good and we'll worth seeing, I have been going to see them since 1994 and they have always been very impressive. But there are now really two versions of the band worth seeing as the North American Aussie Floyd touring band led by one of the Aussie lead guitarists, broke away from the original Aussies in a acrimonious Roger Waters type split a few years back and took the name Brit Floyd. It has resulted in a bit of competition and resulted in both bands getting tighter each time I see them, a double bonus. Have a look at the couple of YouTube clips below and I think you might be impressed.

    • Very probable. I was a bit surprised by the crowd I saw in the video they drew, and I say that as a big feeder fan. I thought they’d draw a really good sized crowd but it looked rows deep. Chuffed for them though. Still think they’re a great band after all these years.  Rumours at they’re doing a Polythene tour next year too.
    • It sounds like Feeder drew a crowd too big for that stage originally. Given the time period they haven’t appeared at Download as well it's a nostalgia thing. Halestorm vs Feeder wasn't the most ideal but leaving after either to get out would have been sweet at least.
    • You cant see everything unfortunately, it would be Halsey there for me 100%, the last 20/25 of Gorillaz. Halsey would be my non negotiable act on that day myself. Oddly Bleech 9:3 would actually give me an option I wouldn't mind between 3:15pm and Halsey. Dogstar would only likely be a 10 minutes thing of I've seen Keanu lol.
    • I think the tent was just right for Feeder, on that day anyway.   If you had a Biffy-esque day again, or someone of that ilk (maybe Pearl Jam for example), whack them on that main stage. 100%.    As it is, I think feeder will be back and probably high up the second stage or main stage next year or 2028.
    • I think we still have 2 acts to announce each day, maybe one more big name to complete the lineup?   Perhaps the big name is Turnstile on Thursday, which isn't sold out yet. And some other names that could be added like Iceage, Band of Horses or Tomora.
