If we go back a few years to when Chic played at Bestival in the mid/late-afternoon, it was (I've posted about this a fair bit) of absolutely no interest to the youngsters. They'd bounce up the stage to see what was happening, and within a minute they'd bounce off again. More surprising to me than that was that the 'Chic hits' were completely unknown to them.

Nile Rodgers, standing on the Pyramid Stage claiming to have been the main inspiration for the Festival and the first person to introduce dairy livestock to the pastures of Worthy Farm.

And to have told Geoffrey of Monmouth that was where the Isle of Avalon was located.

just as is currently happening with Prince, those younger people have had to be told that they like it.

It's rather amazing what a bit of Daft Punk hype can do.

they're not all told they like it, some of them get introduced to it and make their minds up

yep - and as was seen at that time, their minds were made up that it didn't interest them, and that's why they walked away as quickly as they arrived.

Their minds got changed somehow, but nothing to do with hearing Chic songs (else their minds would have changed when they heard them). I wonder what instead it was that changed their minds?

Look - at the end of the day, all music acts and artists (musical or not) are brands. Madonna is a brand, Nile Rodgers is a brand, the guy who plays in the pub and has a demo on MySpace has a brand.

I would estimate that 99-100% of you don't judge music on its merits alone, even if you think you do. Music gets advertised to you - even if you think you found it yourself - then you spend some with that brand. When they release new songs or you discover long-forgotten album tracks, you give it more time of day because you know the brand and have spent some time with it.

If Daft Punk helped make Nile relevant again in 2013-2014 that's their respective brands at work yes, but they're doing what every other artist you've probably ever listened to has done as well. You think Picasso would have sold nearly as much as he did if he wasn't Picasso? Van Gogh's sunflowers would've held the same cache if it was produced by an able primary school kid? Of course not. Doesn't mean you can't not like any of these things, whichever way you get introduced to them.

although there seems to be quite a lot of young people enjoying them here:

yeah, i'm making it all up, and you who were not there knows far more about it than me, much as you knew everyone loved Bruce at Glasto and that Prince is one of the biggest acts in the world (but can only sell 150 tickets sometimes).

Meanwhile, Rob da Bank and others involved in running Bestival who were also there disagree with you and have said to me that they were surprised and disappointed at how few youngsters knew of Chic or was interested in them.

Funny that, eh?

5 years ago chic were nothing more than a cheesy novelty act. Now they are headlining major festivals! It's an incredible turnaround, for a band who havent released any new stuff for over 20 years

I guess everyone had just forgotten they were massive fans

they're headlining major festivals still as a cheesy novelty act as far as I can make out.

What difference does it make as to why someone likes anyone. Obviously, THE most popular single of the year by miles will have introduced him to a new audience. Is that so weird?
