I was watching REM 2003 gig on youtube the other night.

I used to love them, but I dont think the music has aged well at all. Definitely wont be remembered as "legends" if you ask me

Now that they're not out there making their later-career big label albums, people who listen to them will be more drawn towards the early career genius work. Murmur, Reckoning, Document, Green and Life's Rich Pageant are the great alt-rock albums ever made.

It's always cyclical, this kind of thing, and at the moment, REM's stock is at a low point, they'll be 'rediscovered' in a few years and lauded again, I'm sure

worldwide it isnt really close, artics are nowhere near a headline slot in the u.s. in Sweden Arctic played their last nonfestival gig in a 3000 capacity venue, meanwhile pj sold 14000 tickets (Sold out) in a couple of weeks

Do Artic Monkeys sell records outside of the UK? they'll never be more than a club band in the US. They're biggest gig (prestige wise) there was/and will always be, a support slot at Madison Square Garden to Black Keys

Worldwide appeal is not as important as UK appeal. Arctic Monkeys are arguably more popular with your average Glasto attendee than Pearl Jam are.

Wouldn't have a clue about that as I have no idea what the average Glastonbury attendee is. If by that you mean a younger crowd more attracted to younger bands, then the respective Pyramid Stage crowds for Arctic Monkeys and The Rolling Stones might counteract that argument.

I don't really mean this to become an Arctic Monkeys v Pearl Jam debate, I'm just of the opinion that Pearl Jam would make a perfectly good Glastonbury headliner and would pull in a decent crowd.

I'd rather Pearl Jam than a few of the people that have been rumoured to be playing so far. Pearl Jam just look like a really fun band to watch with a lot of crowd participation and Eddie Vedder's vocals seemingly flawless at most times. I've also said for a while that Pearl Jam are way better than Nirvana if you are to go with bands around about the same time.

No I dont mean the age of the band, just how popular the band is.

Glasto headliners are usually either current contemporary acts which are popular (Arctics, Beyonce, Muse, Coldplay) or all time legend acts which both have an older following and who are sufficiently popular that many younger fans would be into them too - see Rolling Stones, Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Macca.

In the UK, Pearl Jam are neither of those things. They've never even had a number 1 album in this country. They'd be a weak Glastonbury headliner, that isn't a comment on the performance but looking at things objectively.

I love Pearl Jam, but have to agree, I don't think they've got enough that people know to make them a good Pyramid headliner. There just aren't enough hits to keep those who go and just see the headliners happy. It's not the bands fault, it's just the way it is. Spin The Black Circle is their only top 10 single, only 6 others even made the top 20.

If they play festivals next summer it will be Download or Leeds/Reading, they wont do Glastonbury for a long time, if ever tbh.

Friends went to IoW and said the gig went well, but they're fans anyway. I've seen them 20+ times and have never seen a bad show, any I've not enjoyed have been because I was not in the right frame of mind to enjoy them, it happens. 2 hours of Pearl Jam on the Pyramid would be amazing for me, but my hope for their next tour is a return to this place:
