Surfer Rosa / Come On Pilgrim are the best. then the slightly more accessible Doolittle, then the two you mention. not the new one (although if you're readying yourself for seeing them live then i suppose listening to the new one couldn't hurt)

The new one is fine. People are being overly harsh. Bagboy, Blue Eyed Hexe, What Goes Bomb etc are fantastic tracks. There are some weaker ones, but it they're growing more and more on me. I actually think the highlights from this album, i enjoy more than the likes of Trompe.

Actually yeah, chronological is probably the best way to process the Pixies albums - unlike most bands. I've had spells of preferring Trompe Le Monde but that's cos of personal reasons - I got it when I was living in Australia and it reminds me of a bloody excellent period of my life - drinking, working hard, getting laid, all that jazz you do when you're 20 and living in the city. All four albums are amazing, I'm not going to count the new one cos it's three EPs put together - it's not an album. Harrumph. So there!

It's close but I prefer Doolittle to Surfer Rosa, I think Charles got better at songwriting between writing for the first and writing for the second.

I think people's vision is often clouded by nostalgia, the bowie record was ok but not a patch on his 70s output. It was good to have new material and was a lovely surprise but I think only a couple of the new songs are top notch.

I really love Bossanova, the 50s/60s pop tunes mixed with pulp sci-fi and b-movies, all done in crazy Pixies fashion is really up my street. I'd rank it up there with Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, though I don't often give Trompe Le Monde a lot of time.

I think the songs on Bossanova and Trompe le Monde are consistently better. Come On Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa and Doolittle probably contain more of my favourite songs and have a rawer edge but I think the latter two are better overall albums. It's so very close though to the point where I'm clutching at straws to try and find something to differentiate them.

I maintain there are few greater pleasures in life than the opening 20 seconds or so of 'Rock Music'.

Neil youngs harvest moon is a classic that sits very nicely alongside the stuff he did in the 60's and 70's
