I do find the judgement being passed down on anyone who likes M&S quite amusing.

So they aren't the greatest band ever, but if someone does like their music and buys the album's and goes to their gigs they have a lot more respect from me than any of the 1000's who will be at the Stones on Sat night who couldn't give less of a fuck about them but just want want to film it with their phones rush off to the chill and charge tent to post it on FB and say they were there

For me I can take M&S or leave them but on a Sunday evening after 5 days of excess with the sun out I can ser it being a good bit of brain out fun

Besides all you guys should be greatful they are playing. It will drag all the people who you obviously despise away from your bands.

I think half the crowd leaving is a bit of an exaggeration, but yeah it was certainly a masterstroke from a ticket sales perspective getting Mumford and The Vaccines to support.

The "box ticking" attitude is the thought process of a dullard, no doubt. But I do know a fair few people going who aren't Stones fans, with the rationale that there's nothing else to grab their attention, and they're saying "I'll kick myself if I don't go and it turns out to be brilliant/ I get big into the Stones one day and know I turned down the chance of seeing them". It's the big headline-grabbing event of the festival, and I don't think you can blame people for being enticed by the allure of that.

Why? Surely the whole point of a festival is, in part, to graze on less familiar music and experience things that you wouldn't do under any other circumstances. Sure that includes dancing in a Yurt and making a model of Micheal Eavis out of wicker, but can't it also be taking a peek at one of the biggest bands in the world, even though you're not a particular fan, so you can see for yourself what the fuss is about? If you only go to what you already know you like and are already a fan of, that seems like a fairly dull thing to do to me

Other festivals give you a lot more time to decide, tickets go on sale later in the year, and you usually know who's on beforehand, and you don't need to go through the process of registration, and they don't sell out instantly like Glastonbury. If you want to go to Glastonbury, your reason has to be Glastonbury and you have to be sure and prepared much further in advance.

There's a difference between doing what you say and going just to tick a box and be able to post on FaceAche that you've seen them though.

I often check out music I'm unfamiliar with or bands I wouldn't pay to see, but it's to broaden my musical knowledge, or to find the next band I'm going to obsess over and spend stupid amounts of money on their back catalogue

There's really no need to get over-excited, I was being flippant at most. Although the fact you read my post like that is a sad statement of what people on the internet are generally like, old boy.

Anyway, the box-ticking I'm referring to is not a "things I'd like experience before I shuffle of this grubby mortal coil" attitude, rather more "I can tag myself in on facebook and people will think I'm cool".

None of that prevents mumfords fans from going though. Although Glastonbury is probably the festival that attracts the most people with 'good' taste in music (or a taste that is most closely aligned to those on this forum) still the vast majority are just ordinary music fans, and evidently ordinary music fans tend to like mumfords quite a lot.
