Non-alcoholic drinks recommendations

Guest James Bolivar

As I finish off my last bottle of ice-cold, proper, root beer, following a two-hour walk through the rolling countryside, I just began to wonder if there were any places to get really interesting, non-alcoholic, drinks at the festival. Has anybody seen any soda-fountains, or brewers of proper ginger-beer? Anywhere that sells real lemonade? Or is it all flavoured perry and Tuborg?

Some of these can be seriously expensive, but some of my favourites:

There's at least 3 mini-stalls selling real squeezed-to-order lemonade - 1 on Stage Road near the Pyramid / Cider Bus, and 2 on Muddy Lane near Yeomans Bridge / Jazz World. All will give you the option of adding mint/ginger/etc.

The Cider Bus does a cracking Apple Juice, although they usually sell out of this by Sunday.

The Ridiculously Expensive Milkshake Company (sorry, can't remember their real name) does milkshakes that are essentially milk + chocolate bar in a blender. They've got at least 1 stall in the main markets and 1 or 2 others around the site. Be prepared to pay through the nose though.

And just remembered - There's quite a few good options around the Green Fields -

The Lizard Stage in the Green Futures Field does just about the cheapest real Lemonade on site (if you can find it - it's located slightly off the beaten path), and there's a cluster of stalls around the main entrance to the Green Fields (next to Greenpeace) who you may wish to check out that offer Smoothies/Blends/etc.

I find starting the day with a nice cold pint of milk is essential. It's the nicest milk I've ever tasted (although it's probably because of the circumstances!)

And the £1 tubs of Yeo Valley yoghurts are great .. Although technically not a drink.

The wood-fired pizza yurt next to the Tiny Tea Tent sells hibiscus squash. Pachamamas (the yurt at the top of Pennards) sells violet squash. And there's the fruit stall at Greenpeace, of course - watermelon isn't technically a drink but it's not far off!

I remember being relatively sober during the days at one Glastonbury many festivals ago. I also remember drinking hand made lemonade like a bastard (because of the heat of the day and dehydration from the night before's drinking) from various little stalls spotted around the place. I can't even recall if these little outlets are still there or not. I realise this has been of little use to you James, but thanks for assisting my memory of that Glasto. It was another very happy one.

Hi James,

I can't claim to be an expert on what's available on site, but I do have a suggestion. If you take some cinnamon sticks, root ginger, black peppercorns and a tea strainer (all fairly lightweight), you can have something really special. Get a 2 litre bottle of cola from a stall (or bring it with you if you can), put one cinnamon stick, a few slices of ginger and about a dozen peppercorns in and leave overnight. Strain it to avoid peppercorns and enjoy! A great start to the day whether you're hangover or just like a kick start!

I can't say I know about spaniels, guess I've lived a sheltered life. I've dabbled in the past but never tried to get past dogs. If you're unsure, you can substitute other drinks and flavourings. Lemonade, tonic water, dandelion and burdock etc. with vanilla, cloves, chilli, nutmeg and so on. The only limit is your imagination! :-)
